Welcome to ScapeCrunch

We are ScapeCrunch, the place where planted aquarium hobbyists come to build relationships and support each other. When you're tired of doom scrolling, you've found your home here.

Please look through my buy ounce cry ounce grail tank, let me know your thoughts. Questions at the end of the post.

I never run a heater without a controller, an inkbird. Tossed a little heater in my wifes little shrimp tank and i added a temp probe so i can monitor that. Didn't want to add a heater controller since its such a small tank.

Already mentioned but sumps are silent unless they are set up incorrectly. You set it up to achieve a full siphon through the primary drain. Thus making a silent water movement process.

I'm going BDBS for simplicity. I've had good success with low tech with dirt capped by sand. However, since you plan on dosing, may as well take the substrate out of the equation.

Rule of aquariums, is all heaters fail.

Probe goes in the tank, heater plug goes in the controller socket: when water temperature goes high, controller shuts the heater off 👍👍

Cheap insurance! Even has dual probes for bigger tanks + sumps where you want to split the load across two heaters.

Let me ask you this then, since no sump (although people here promise quiet 🤫 I vowed off them for good 10 years ago). Would it be better to get the ink bird that has 1 prob and one socket for heater and one for cooler just in case I find a problem with to hot down the road ie placement/ balance of single basement HVAC and wife and kid da having access and or moving somewhere hot hot… just an idea I was having even before your post but yea ink bird! Thx

I have a lot of comments but I'll start with the sump noise.

Sump noise is terrible and no one should stand for it. However, sumps do provide plenty of advantages over a canister filter, not least of which is aeration and easy access. So, can you have a silent sump? The answer is yes. Many people do it today and I've had it in every tank except my current one. My current one uses an AIO overflow that is also silent.

The main noise from a sump is due to the overflow. This is why a genius by the name of Bean Animal created what has become known as the BeanAnimal Overflow - a silent and fail-safe aquarium overflow system. It's awesome and tested by many, many aquarists. However, it's quite involved and, honestly, overkill for smaller aquariums like mine.

Thankfully, an enterprising person by the name of Herbie modified the BeanAnimal into a smaller version that works great for smaller aquariums. Naturally, it's called the Herbie Overflow for quiet aquariums.

You only get a chance to use a sump when you are initially designing your system like you are. I wanted to be sure you knew about these newer overflow designs that have revolutionized the use of sumps in home aquaria.
