6 Week Update - All is going well.

A compilation of my notes.

Chemistry
Following the PPS Protocol
Today AM, Before Light, CO2, and Feedings
pH 6.7, KH 8, GH 11, NO3 18ish, PO4 0.4, TDS 191
The only change is TDS, which was 118 after the last water change on 8/9 (8 days ago)
This is the first week I've not performed a Sunday Water Change

Plants
Hygrophila pinnatifida, Ceratopteris thalictroides, and Ludwigia palustris var Super Red are all starting to emerge from the water.
Ludwigia has been trimmed multiple times with tops added to try and make a nice bush.
Crypt Parva is slowly expanding. More at initial planting would have been ideal.
Buce is doing well, I’m seeing new leaves and roots. Lost most of the Super Mini Ghost. They melted quickly, one day looking good, the next, jelly-like.
The HC Cuba stuffed into the driftwood at the water's edge failed poorly, most died back, and there is some new growth appearing slowly. Lost the left front inside wood planting. Some have hitchhiked the current to the outside of the left front wood and are establishing a stand.
Eleocharis Mini has been through its dieback and is growing new shoots
Hydrocotyle verticillata is spreading.
Red Root Floaters are expanding, staying put, too.
Added Pearl Moss at the waters edge on the left rear wood. It’s spreading nicely. Leaf(?) shape is changing.
Added Fissidens to the back side of the right front wood. It’s spreading, the initial area has some brown fonds..

Algae
There was some early brown algae (diatoms?) that was slight and cleared within 2 days of adding Oto’s, Snails and second batch of shrimp.
Been pulling some small clumps of BBA from the backside of the left rear corner wood.
Noticed a few light colored pebbles have a greenish tinge.
Pulled a new individual strands of hair algae off the Hydrocotyle

Livestock
All fish accounted for.
Lots of shrimp activity, some look about to be gravid.
Fewer shrimp in the pre-filter with each cleaning.
Snails have been doing snail things. Found a patch of snail eggs on a Buce leaf under the left front wood.
None of the inhabitants likes the Snowflake Shrimp Food from Aquatic Arts. Glad I only have a sample size.
Same with the Bee Pollen, that's been repurposed as springtail food.
They all like the Hikari Mini Algae Wafers, Aquatic Arts Fish and Invertebrate Sinking Pellets, and Ultra Fresh Shrimp Pro Seafood Patties.

Hardware
Changed the CO2 check valve to GLA Atomic. Changed CO2 tubing to GLA Transparent Green. Using GLA 4dKH solution with Bromothymol Blue in the Drop Checker.
Changed the filter return nozzle from the lily end to the reliever end. The current was too strong; fish and shrimp would get flung across the tank.

Whats Next
For at least the next two weeks, no additions, until the weather breaks.
I'd like to plant something here. About 2 inches down there is water. I have no idea what to plant there. Located in the left rear. Open to suggestions, please

I'm torn about what I want to add for fish. I'd like a Badis or two. I think there is enough space and hiding room for them to stay out of each other's line of sight. Keeping enough live food around might be an issue. A Brine Shrimp hatchery dish kit would help. I'm thinking of letting the shrimp go crazy, then getting Badis, giving them baby shrimp to prey upon. I've been toying with Guppies too, lots of fry for a Badis to hunt down.

I'd also like to replace the glass filter input pipe with a Stainless one with a skimmer. I'm having trouble figuring out what works in a shallow 7" tall tank.

Some pictures.

Gorgeous!!!

Amazing pictures, what camera are you using?
Nikon 1 V1 with a 10-30 Lens. Close-ups with an added +10 Macro lens attachment. The magnification lens brings out the details.

Some details from the Right Front Low Wood Buce image.

2 Month Update

TLDR - All is well

Today is 8 weeks since planting. Much to my surprise, the aquarium is progressing along well. I've set up 100's of tanks in a previous life as an LFS employee, and I've never had one go this smoothly. Hope I didn't just jinx myself. Since the early diatom outbreak, the glass has been clean, and almost nothing shows on a white sponge. The snails have reproduced, and I've been picking off some babies before they get out of hand. Shrimp have bred, plus, there are 5-6 females currently carrying eggs.

Chemistry
Following the PPS protocol and waiting for the TDS to climb 100 units over the baseline was uncomfortable. Around the 9-day mark, the water's surface had a film, and some foam was appearing along the water's edge on the glass. TDS was only 74 units above baseline, yet I had misgivings, so a water change was performed. I'm back on weekly Saturday or Sunday water changes with small daily dosing of both micros and macros.

What's Next
Once the shrimp breed a bit more and there are lots of babies, I'll obtain a few Badis. A school of small dither fish would be nice too, can't decide, so many choices.

haha... you sound like me. Everything is going great, but I'm sure it's going to :poop: just any day. 😆

~10 Weeks Along

Notes on today's water change:
60% (6-gallon) water change.
Mixed 3 gallons of straight RO with 3 gallons remineralized to 90 TDS
TDS before 201 - TDS after 100
KH before 9 - KH after 6
GH before 11 - GH after 5
Removed at least 12 shrimp from the prefilter.
Cleaned the filter inlet and out tubes.
Refreshed Drop Counter fluid
Cleaned Glass, minimal film, no algae spots.
To try and prevent/reduce some stringy algae:
Bumped up CO2 rate to ~60 BPM from ~45 BPM
Changed CO2 start time to 10:30 AM from 11:00 AM - 2 hours before lights start.
Added the rear baffle to the reliever lily pipe end. Seeing better flow in the back right corner.

PPS seems to be working well for me with this setup. I went 13 days between water changes; it's working, but a bit out of my comfort zone of weekly water changes. Testing PO4 and Nitrate before water changes has yielded consistent results. PO4 at 0.7 ppm via Hanna Checker. Nitrate is an estimate of 15 ppm using a Salifert kit. I have trouble with the differences in shading. A freshwater Nitrate Checker would be helpful.

Full View

Emergent growth has been accelerating. The Watersprite tops are drying out and dying off. I think I'm starting to see some new growth from the emergent area.

Hygrophila also has the same issue with emergent leaves that dry out. One stem has passed that phase, showing nice growth in the open air.

Some stringy algae has reared its head. It's hard to see without magnification. Impossible to tweeze to remove. Thoughts on the source and removal are welcome.

All in all, I am still flabbergasted by how well this setup has progressed.

Notes from today's water change.

Seeing strands of green algae. Testing shows increased PO4 (1.4 vs 0.7 usually) and NO3 (25 vs 15 usually) levels.
60% water change with RO water.
TDS before 186 - TDS after 91
KH before 8 - KH after 5
GH before 10 - GH after 5
Gravel vacuumed.
Algae brushed from plants.
Cleaned filter internals and rescued shrimp from the prefilter.
Replaced Purigen. Recharging the used Purigen.

Nice to see the pygmaeus are back in stock 👍👍 How are your red Rilis doing?
The shrimp are multiplying—loads of baby shrimp cavorting about. Going to let them go for another month or so, then add some Black Tiger Badis.

3 Month Update - All is mostly well

Chemistry
Testing these past 2 water changes has shown a sharp decrease in Nitrates, from a baseline of 15ppm down to 2ppm. PO4 bottomed out. I attribute this to plant mass. There is a lot more in there. Dosing is daily, following the PPS protocol. I've increased the amount and will monitor closely

Algae
I've been pulling individual strands of hair algae. I wonder if the lower fert levels are contributing.

Livestock
Red Rili Shrimp are breeding machines. That is my goal: a large breeding population, then Black Tiger Badis. The shrimp continue to populate the prefilter. It's become a ritual on water change day to put them back in the aquarium.
Green (Kubotai) Rasbora are confounding me. Started with 11. As of today, I count 7. I've not found any bodies. I think 2 of them have paired off and are attempting to spawn. The group usually stays front and center in the open area. These two are dancing around each other in the Hydrocytole. If any of the other come near, they are chased away. This activity started after a water change. A school of 7 is too sparse. I've ordered another dozen; we'll see what happens.
The Kuhli loaches were a mistake. They hide. I knew that, but 10-year-old me had them in that first 20 Long. Nostalgia got the best of me.

Plants
Everything is growing well, at least it appears that way to me.

When I first added 20 cardinal tetras and 15 kubotai rasboras to my 49 gallon tank, I had a few losses of both. I think they're both susceptible to loss when young and being moved to a new tank. Once I added a few more of each and after time, I see no more losses. The Kubotai are the super active fish in the tank.

I have questions about fertilization.

For reference, I'm following the PPS protocol as described on the GLA site.
The aquarium volume is ~10 gallons, including filter, calculated using the TDS change method using AI that can be found elsewhere here on ScapeCrunch.
Daily dose of Micros 0.5 ml
Daily dose of Macros 1ml
Heavily planted.
Moderate fish load that are very well fed.
CO2 injected, the indicator does go yellowish by midday. Been waiting on the next 15% off sale at Hanna for a CO2 test kit, and other stuff.
Lighting via Chihiros WRBG II Pro, 8-hour duration with a 90-minute ramp up/down.
PAR Values as follows:

Light Setting Power 49% Test - At Water Surface - Light 11.25” Off Surface
Red - 50
Green - 42
Blue - 56
White - 49

All that said...

Latest testing for the past few water changes has shown Nitrate and PO4 being a bit wonky.

10.6.25 tank stuff.webp

After the 10/5/25 water change, I doubled the daily dose:
Daily dose of Micros 1 ml
Daily dose of Macros 2 ml

Testing on 10/6/25 shows Nitrates lower and PO4 higher than the previous day. This confuses me. I'd have expected Nitrate to rise also.

I know 1 day does not make a trend. I'll keep testing daily around the same time.

All the above for ...

Where do I go with this?

Do I need to mix a batch of ferts with a different ratio? If so, how do I determine what may be correct?
