Time for the 1-month update.
All in all, things are going well.
Some plants have melted back totally, some a little, and are coming back. I thought I had too many Super Mini Ghost Buce after I split up the in vitro culture. The extras went into an emersed setup. Later on, I realized I should have planted them. After doing so, they promptly melted away to nothing. The Dwarf Hairgrass is reverting; new growth is visible, the older parts are not that pretty right now. Same with the Dwarf Baby Tears.
Ludwigia Super Red is taking off. I've trimmed it back and replanted the stems multiple times. One mistake was not ordering enough Crypt Parva Mini. Twice as much would have been just right.
Going through the brown algae phase currently, it's not bad, only a few plants have some on the leaves.
About 2 weeks in 10 Cherry Shrimp were added. A day later, all but one disappeared. A few days later, I found a molt, then nothing. Cleaning the prefilter this past Sunday, I found them all. I was afraid I jumped the gun on livestock. Happy to know I hadn't inadvertently killed them. In celebration, I've ordered another 10, 3 Otocinclus, and some snails. They arrive this week on Thursday.
The tank has been stable. Daily testing stopped 2 weekly water changes ago, now it's 2-3 times a week. I've been following the
GLA PPS protocol, so far, so good. I'm seeing growth. A few strands of green algae have recently appeared; they are diligently plucked out.
Hardware is giving no issues. I've never experienced a filter so quiet. It lives on the floor, feet from my desk, and I infrequently hear the occasional burp when the skimmer sucks in a bit of air.
Being there has been a 20-year gap since my last planted tank and 10 years since my last reef, I can't be more pleased with the progress. The hobby certainly has advanced over that time. I thank all those who have kept pushing the boundaries that have made it easier this time around to achieve positive results with research on sites like this. Glad you didn't give up forums, Art. I know I did for a time after being in that business.
