I am working on my mistakes…. The next one will be huge.

Instead of continuing the old build thread, I wanted to make a new one. This build might go just as terrible, but I want to put the old one behind me. I really wish I had given myself a month or two break because I feel like I have algae PTSD. I’m pretty burned out, and I sort of dread trying again. Oh well, too late now.

I wanted to try 2Hr Aquarist stuff, but already had the Controlsoil. I bought it a year prior (see previous journal) and decided to go ahead and use it. Hopefully I’ll make a successful transition to nutrient depleted aquasoil, and then restart with the 2Hr stuff later.

I didn't plan on starting a new journal until about a month in, but since my aquasoil is already starting to give out of ammonia, I need to get it going to get help making the transition to full NPK dosing.

With that said…..

Ben’s Plant Pharm 2.0
(BTW, in case you were wondering, I’m a pharmacist. Hence the pharm)

PO, K, Mg at the beginning. Been adding about 2-3ppm PO4 daily
Transition to the addition of NO3 as aquasoil depletes

Filter
Oase HOB BioStyle

CO2
Injected via GLA regulator
Bar type diffuser placed inside the HOB filter

Livestock

Notes
  • The Alternanthera reineckii ‘Mini’ was in bad shape when I opened the container. Might have been bad when I got it and then it was a week before I used it.
  • 8-15-25: Added Synogonthas Vichada and Blood Vomit. Checked NO3 for the first time. It was 40. Started making twice weekly water changes.
  • 8-18-25: Increased light to 45% of the full “Fish” setting. PAR should be just about 114
  • 8-23-25: Pogostemon stellatus Dassen and Rotala Florida added
  • 8-29-25: Discovered my NO3 was 0. Aquasoil is giving out way earlier than I expected
  • Had a short diatom period, but it seems to be resolving
  • I had planned to increase my light to 50% of full "Fish" setting which would be a (tested) PAR of 126, but right now, things are going so good, I don't want to mess it up. We'll hold off for now.
  • 8-31-25: Starting to dose my own mixture of NPK and Mg. I really need to determine my actual water volume. What I am trying to dose, and what it tests as after I dose it are a good bit off.

Here you can see the older Rotala Sunset on the left. On the right is supposed to be Rotala Florida, but it is looking a lot like the Sunset did at the same stage. Argh!

Syn Vichada is doing pretty good. It is growing slow. The new growth is all green and the old growth is dying off. I want to cut old leaves and clean it up a little, but right now, I don't really want to disturb it. I watch it every minute. I loving having it.

4 Week Update
  • Tank is 4 weeks old today
  • Increased light to 50% of "fish" setting which is my goal. When I did the PAR meter tests this gave me a PAR of 124 under the light, but back then I had a bit more substrate. So I’m going to say we are at about ~120 and leave it at that.
  • I tested to find my actual water volume yesterday and came up with 13.2 gallons or about 50L. This should help with dosing as I have to deal with depleted aquasoil.
  • The diatom algae is still bad and the cyano is increasing around the Vichada. I’m already reducing fertz some and also going to remove some Wallachi so the Vichada area isn’t shaded. The diatom had gotten better. I'm not sure why it has reversed course.
  • The Rotala Sunset from Buce Plant and Rotala Florida from Aquatic Plants Factory have grown out to be the same thing. Based on Dennis Wong's pictures, I believe they are both Sunset.

Its looking great!

But based on your notes its not going so well. The diatoms should go away. I'd just keep cleaning off/topping the plants. It will eventually disappear.
I have no clue on the cyano.

Its not going horrible, but yeah, its frustrating. It will be due for a trim soon, so hopefully take care of some of the diatoms. The cyano showed up in just the Vichada the day after I got it. It must have already been hiding out there. It's still only in that plant. I want to pull it up and clean it good, but I'm excited to have this plant, and it had been doing well. So I am reluctant to disturb it. Like the diatoms, the cyano had gotten better and now is back. Not sure what the deal is there. I'm being positive and thinking dealing with these will make me better at this.

APF is notorious for this, mislabeling plants and if you bring it up to them, they just tell you they sent the correct plant. I’m not bashing them by any means as they have the absolute most inventory of any retailer in the US, but they are poor with customer service in that regard.

Yeah, I think I saw where you or someone else mentioned this. I'm on the Buce Plant waiting list. I hope for the right one. I hate to get just one plant though. With shipping, that gets expensive.

Actually, now that I look back at Denis' pictures, I might have Florida, but the Sunset I got was wrong. Who knows!

They went downhill ever since the change of ownership.

Yes I thought the same, since I got the Florida from APF as well and it looks just like yours and the one from Dennis just not doing so well ;)

Meant to ask earlier; did you do a dark start or just plant?

Interesting! Do tell please I am

I had 2 recent shipments from APF both were actually really good.
That’s good news!! Not to say they don’t deliver healthy specimens, because they do. It’s just their customer service and passion for the business has significantly declined. E.g. plant profiles, blog posts, labeling integrity, etc.

I just planted. I should have done a better job doing water changes, but I didn't have any trouble until the diatoms started.

Ben, I see in the first post that you planned to transition to DIY macro dosing and that your test on 8/29 showed NO3 at 0ppm. What is your current fertilizer dosing? This may provide some clues to your cyanobacteria issues.
Yeah back on 8/29 I hadn't been dosing any NO3 because until then there had been plenty from the ammonia leaking from the substrate. So I was surprised when it turned up 0. I wasn't testing every day, but enough that I had expected to notice a decline before it went to 0. I started dosing after that, but I over did it a bit. I think that is what bumped the diatom and cyano back up. Now I have a mix of 5ppm NO3, 2ppm PO4, 1ppm Mg, and 5ppm K. I do a double dose after a water change and then single dose every 48 hours. We'll see how that goes.
