These were 3D printed for me to try.

After trying all 3 Diffusers, I'm using the one on the right. Flow Redirector for OASE CrystalSkim 350 by Stuff Jon Makes MakerWorld: Download Free 3D Models

For my use case, it made the most sense. The aquarium is short, a scant 7" tall. The ones to the left and center created too much flow at the base, pushing sand around.

Thoughts on each L-R.

Slips over the base; the flow direction can be changed to suit needs.

Requires removing the base; the flow direction can be changed to suit needs.

Requires removing the base; the flow direction is fixed. Has a large diffuser area, allowing for a more gentle flow. The area where the vertical section meets the base is thin; care is required to prevent breakage.

In the few hours it's been running, I've not had any casualties. I did stumble across this version with a different top that appears to keep critters out. Oase Crystalskim 350 Flow Diverter by soerenharaldsson MakerWorld: Download Free 3D Models

Fresh off the printer, here's the first (and hopefully only) diffuser I'm trying. Will test it out in the coming days. I'm also going to be printing a different shrimp guard, as even in the shrimp configuration, I was still getting lots of shrimp stuck in my skimmer.

New shrimp guard/float. Tested and seems to work ok. Does look like it will do a better job of keeping small shrimp out. It replaces both of the Oase's top two pieces. Here's the file on Maker World: Oase Crystalskim 350 Shrimp Guard
You'll want supports and tree supports cut printing time by more than 30 minutes over normal supports.

@techman81 Hows that shrimp guard working?

I'm going to need to do something myself.
Good so far. I was seeing the same issue as you with the leaf litter along with small shrimp. I'm not testing this in the tank with neocaridina right now but as for leaf litter, the smaller stuff sticks to the outside of the screen, and bigger stuff tends to just move around and eventually stick to the tank wall where I can collect it. Foam stays clear now with exception of just a few very small bits that are able to make their way through the screen.
