As another option, I'd also recommend Pakistani Loaches (aka yoyo loach). You see them all the time, not just ground dwellers either, they swim a fair bit around mid tank height.
Here is a pic of mine from my low tech tank. I need to get some more actually. They would be amazing in a big group.

Love the pakistani loaches - have had these many years ago. Slowly creeping up in species size here.....
 
I have hillstream loaches and panda garras. I think both are cool, but you will see the panda garras more often. They’re very active and will swarm my hands when I’m doing maintenance. I have to put a mesh over my pump or siphon when doing water changes because they’re so curious.

I know at least some loaches eat snails. What about shrimp?
Yoyo's will decimate shrimp, Hillstreams pretty shrimp safe but may get some shrimplets almost by accident. Dwarf Chains are shrimp safe until they get closer to mature and then will take out all shrimplets.
