Ok, adding substrate to my 75 gallon 120*45*50. This will be my first go at an entirely inert substrate using BDBS . 3 bags of medium grit have resulted in about 2.25 inches depth in front sloping to about 4 inches in the back. For those of you with "true" garden style tanks, does that seem like a good depth? Asking before I cut open another bag 😁 .

Spot on. But dont be surprised to see it a uniform level 3 inches or so in short order…

As much as I love BDBS it has an amazing propensity to self level itself quickly…

Yeah, as I was dumping it in I thought it seemed like it might want to just auto level once the tank is filled. That makes me wonder about the bigger root plants in the back.

I'd go just a little deeper. Mine is 3.5" to 4" across the entire tank. Makes planting easier and keeping them planted easier.

OK, one more bag it is. I'll just forego any slope and make it even. Thanks.
Like others have said the slope will eventually even out.

Good luck with the tank I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Next question. @Burr740 may best be able to answer this, but I know others in the group are using his ferts with auto dosers. The instructions say to shake before each use. How much do these really settle? I don't want to buy Chihiros's stir plate/holder and, of course, I'm not around to shake dosing containers before auto delivery all the time so what's a lazy guy to do? I'll be mixing full gallons and from that, filling my 500ml containers. I'll be using these for the first time on this tank.

usually if the ferts are precipitating out , that means you are loosing something of value , more often than not happens with Fe, can also happen if you have Ca, Mg & PO4 in the same container, Even Fe can react with PO4 , 2 ways to avoid it 1) DIY ferts , make them highly diluted & add more ml per day or 2) just keep PO4 away from most things, I usually do 4 different ferts 1) N+K 2) P+K, 3) Micros with FE DTPA, EDTA 4) Fe Gluconate , I make sure the Water I use esp for micros is 3-4 ph ( using Citric Acid) interactions reduce greatly with low PH

@JayP
I've set mine up with a 20$ el cheapo mixer with a kasa plug. I have it mix for a few minutes right before the autodoser starts slurping juice.

Yeah, I thought about that because I have a couple of stir plates from home brewing, but my Chihiros dosing containers sit in the Chihiros holders or my custom 3D printed holders. Also, I'm trying to avoid plugging more things into my Kasa strips as I'm already using 5-6 of the 6 outlets.
