Expanding on the conversation from the "What did you do...today" thread on Wabi-Kusa, it was suggested that we start a new thread.

There are many different views on what Wabi-Kusa is and what it's become. After reading many articles, posts, etc, watching videos by dozens of different creators. I settled on what I felt was a simple method that, to me, felt its Wabi-Kusa in its most basic form.

My first attempt is in its current state.

This video was my main tutorial.

I wanted to experiment with Wabi-Kusa to add more greenery to my home. They are fabulous little living pops of light and color that can be placed around the house. I also wanted to use only the materials and plants on hand to start, except for a spool of green nylon or polyester thread. Cotton will degrade over time.

It took a bit to get the hang of wrapping a ball of "dirt" into an actual object. The ball is moistened coir with a center of 3-5mm lava rock. One can use pebbles, too. I don't know what role the rocks play in my case. I'm using RO water. Initially, the plant stems were wrapped on the top side of the ball with green thread. Wrapped some Christmas moss on the sides, then using emersed trimmings of Rotala super red and Kedagang Red Buce*. I started it in a quart deli cup. with a lid and some holes for ventilation. Placed it in a south-facing windowsill and turned it every day. Much to my delight, it started growing. Then I got a bit fancy and ordered a Chihiros Glass Pot, AquaWorx SOL LED, and Adjustable Stand. Found a dish of Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini” tissue culture at the LFS, plopped some of that in the middle, and it's starting to spread.

Maintenance is easy. Once a week, I pull the ball out, rinse the rocks, and clean the glass. Refresh with RO water, add one drop of APT 3, and spray twice a week with APT Dew.

Mistakes I've made. Not using enough moss on the sides. Flipping the lid on the Glass Pot, that allowed the humidity to escape, drying the tips of the Rotala.

For mold control, I'm using springtails.

Workstation for ball creation.

Made another dozen balls yesterday. I'm thinking of gifting some grown-out balls as gifts this season. Until I plant them, they are in the fridge.

Do you Wabi-Kusa? Please post about yours in the thread, and let us learn more about this together.

* I have an emersed Buce experiment going.

"Planted" 5 of the dozen I created yesterday. The others are in the fridge.

Placed them in the USN 3N on a bed of lava rock with RO water. Springtails added for mold control. Covered in plastic wrap. Lighting by an AquaWorx EOS.

L-R - All with Christmas Moss.
Rear
Rotala super red, Marsilea angustifolia, Dark Red micro Buce
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor"
Crypt wendtii "Sindoor", Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini”

Front
Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini”, Crypt nurii
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor"

A month later

For reference, this is how it started.
L-R - All with Christmas Moss.
Rear
Rotala super red, Marsilea angustifolia, Dark Red micro Buce
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor"
Crypt wendtii "Sindoor", Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini”

Front
Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini”, Crypt nurii
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor"

This is today.

Moss is doing well, slowly growing around the perimeter.

Rear
Rotala super red, Marsilea angustifolia, Dark Red micro Buce - Rotalla died, Buce and Marsilea have new growth.
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor" - Marsilea and Crypt both have new growth.
Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini”, Crypt nurii - This one looks sad, Crypt is trying, some melting, and a few new leaves. Hydrocotyle is wrapping itself low on the ball.

Front
Crypt wendtii "Sindoor", Hydrocotyle tripartita “mini” - Crypt is struggling, removed a lot of melting leaves, a few new green leaves are appearing. Hydrocotyle died.
Marsilea angustifolia, Crypt wendtii "Sindoor" - Crypt melted.

The other one I started first has similar growth. The Ludwigia is dying. Hydrocotyle is growing, but yellowing. Buce is producing new leaves.

I've moved them to new locations, as I needed the room for more records.

Some Random Thoughts

Using an inert substrate ball might be a mistake.

I was foliar feeding with APT Dew but found floaters in the bottle. I was advised to discard the product. I noticed the product was out of stock after that. It's back now, but ordering 1 item with shipping and tax doesn't make sense to me.

As an experiment, I started adding a drop of APT 3 to each ball.

I was torn between a thumbs up and a sad face. I chose to send positive vibes.
Thanks, I'm not upset about the losses. I went into this pretty blindly, following only the recommendations of one YouTuber. I found the information about Wabi-Kusa to be scattered and inconsistent. I went down one path, and we'll see where that leads.

The Dew was out when I tried to order it. They said it would be back around the middle of Nov. I think I originally ordered from Amazon. I was going to try to make my own spray. I'm just not sure of the concentrations. Was going to start at like 10% of what I squirt into my tank.
Ordered THESE to mix it in. Looking like until after the holidays are over before I'll get anything done though.

Might work to take a bit of tank water out right after I do my post water change double dose, and spray that. Hmmmm

An update is in order.

This didn't go so well. I have salvaged the balls and have them in a closed container on a shelf with lights. The moss is mossing nicely, the Buce played nicely and is still there. Marsilea is doing something, I'm not sure what. The Hydrocotyle melted away, I see a few shoots trying to come back. I'm going to keep them growing to see what happens.

The first attempt shown in the first post failed. That vessel has been repurposed for ...
Anubias and Buce Terrarium that I created today.

Anubias
Jungle Star and Stardust Mini

Buce
Kedagang Mini Round, Dark Red Micro, and Kedagang Red, the latter two I've been growing emmersed.

With Juncus repens around the base.
