@Unexpected ...your timing is fortuitous.

I've been taking a brain break from work and am looking primarily at the Oase Biomaster 600 (non-Thermo) vs Eheim 2217. I

The Eheim keeps coming in as seemingly "bullet proof" but there are some who can't tolerate it's quirks/cleaning. From the reviews I've seen, the noise is the same for both (very important, I can't stand loud pumps). I've seen complaints with the Oase 600 of gas buildup and "burping" issues. But overall, I haven't found anyone who's done a direct head to head.

I'm quite torn between these two honestly, and both appear strong enough to power a yugang reactor. Whenever I hear numerous people saying, "I've run this filter for 10, 15, 20 years" (re: the 2217) it's truly hard to ignore. But then again the Oase hasn't been around as long so perhaps it's just as reliable. I do see that Eheim has like 0 representation (therefore warranty) here in the US.

For a tank this size, I love Fluval FX4. I make my own pre-filter, clean that weekly and believe it is really effective removing organics from the tank. I am a fan of 1 inch diameter tubing.

Any flow will do, as long as the water is not stagnant. The reactor will give virtually no flow reduction.

@Yugang Thanks for the vote for the Fluval FX4. I know it's very popular and has a very strong pump...my gripe with it is the footprint. That is one big, round filter. Worried it won't fit in the stand I have.

What stand do you have? I have an fx2 on my 75gal and absolutely love it and I have a fx6 on a 180gal

Haven’t put it together yet, but given its position in the house my wife wanted something more appealing than a DIY or “black box”: Top Fin® Aquarium Stand - 55 to 75 Gallon

So I’m leaning Oase for footprint, but also ease of cleaning that prefilter for when she has to clean it. But I’m highly intrigued by the FX2! Just haven’t seen as much about it. Is it quiet?

Fair enough but I do not think an Oase canister filter will fit in that either. heck I don't know of a single canister filter that would fit into a cabinet like that since its divided its height down the middle.

This is a gripe but why would these companies make a stand that does not fit a canister filter? They are doing a huge disservice to the hobby.

Edit: looked through pictures looks like they are removable shelves hopefully that is that case. I'd consider putting the stand together before ordering the filter to confirm.

They are removable. I just went out and measured the shelves (pre-assembly in case I need to return).

I the area where the canister will go is 13.75”x 14.5” x 25.5” (WxDxH). So I don’t see how the one reviewer could cram an FX4 in there, but an FX2 would fit.

The biomaster 600 is 18.9” tall and 9.5” square.

Yeah there is no way an fx4 fits in there. While I've never used an Oase filter being able to clean the prefilter is a huge benefit other canisters cannot provide you. While the Oase is a bit more expensive in my opinion the nonribbed hosing and spray bar are a better deal then that of the FX2 offerings. You have to either build or buy the spray bar from fluval and then also upgrade from the ribbed hosing.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for so much input and help. I feel like I've already worn out my welcome.

Due to some sales coming to an end today, I pulled the trigger on a few things:
1. Canister: Going with the Oase biomaster 600 - ease of use was a big factor given my wife is often the one stuck with tank cleaning duties. I also like the footprint, included spray bar, and customizability of so many media compartments. Looking forward to tweaking this along the way.

2. Yugang reactor - I snagged the clear acrylic model from Aqua Rocks Colorado which is currently on quite the sale, Yugang Horizontal CO2 Reactor - Acrylic. Their customer service was great with light and hardscape selection as well. I went this route vs DIY cause I may need to mount it to the wall....and this is much preferable aesthetically!

At this point all I need is a CO2 tank, get it filled, then put all this stuff together. That's likely going to take a few weeks, but once I get it together I'll start a journal to track progress.

Thank you all again!

I have three Oase Biomasters - a 250, 350, and 600. They are all on low tech tanks but I love them. So easy to clean the prefilters weekly. I have spare sponges so I just take the old ones off, replace with clean ones, then clean the dirties and have them ready for the next week. I only take the canisters apart for cleaning once or twice a year. I use their spray bars. And I also have generic prefilter sponges on the intakes because I have neocaridina shrimp. Having the canisters on pull out/sliding shelves makes it easier to clean the prefilters.

Glad we could all be of service. Now you must make a build thread or we will gather our pitch forks!

I have eheim 4+ 600 and oase 850 both on my tank. Eheim is completely silent while oase isn't. I wouldn't have it in my bedroom. Also many people complain about constant air burping. I get used to it. Drilled extra holes on the pipe. Somwhere it just sucks in the air and every time i shake it it burps it out. So I don't share that enthusiasm over that filter. But yes, it's definitely easier to clean. I read also somewhere in the yt comments that you have to change or shave?! O rings in the filter so they fit better. Will try that.

I have 4 Oase Thermo BioMasters running on my tanks (2x 350 and 2x 850). Three of them are silent and one makes more of a hum and rattle no matter what I do to try and alleviate it. I have no problems with air pockets or burping and they all self prime readily.
I have had Eheims in the past - most were silent, one was noisy. My theory is that any brand will have individual filters that just make noise dependent on the situation. You need to be prepared to try out and possibly exchange any canister filter you settle on - any given one will have someone out there complaining about noise.

To me, the built in heaters and easy to clean prefilters are game changers and I am sold on Oase.
