Welcome to ScapeCrunch

We are ScapeCrunch, the place where planted aquarium hobbyists come to build relationships and support each other. When you're tired of doom scrolling, you've found your home here.

That didn't take long

I haven't been banned, only had posts deleted. One was where i referred Dennis's 2hr website for a helpful article related to the discussion, and the same moderator listed above stated that we have all we need on this site, and some of Dennis's theories were rubbish....without giving further explanation. Actually, pretty much any external links or references at all is a big no no on that site it seems.

It does make us appreciate the wonderful moderators/admins on this site for sure :)

How do you get banned without posting? 😂

I’ve gone into detail about the Yugang horizontal reactor and the Open Flow reactor in my journals there. One person asked for more help, and Yugang helped me help him. No one ever said a word of criticism to me about any of it. I’ll be surprised if anything comes of the post.

1. I'm still on TPT. I can't really look at it. With all the ads, it is so tedious. I just hate looking at the pages. Years ago when I paid, the ads were reduced but still there. It still sucked.
2. I casually look at UKAPS. I find some of the formatting there difficult as well, but I like that it is a bit compressed. It seems there that the same person answers every question. That has prevented me from participating. I'm curious what their issues were. Can someone elaborate or feel free to PM me.
3. I don't see how Koan can be banned for offering up references. To me, that is the difference between a good forum and Facebook. On FB, idiots give you their stupid answers left and right. Here, we often offer up data beyond just opinion. That's what makes this so much better.

Follow the money, follow the key drivers that shareholders and other stakeholders monitor.

TPT is owned by VerticalScope Inc., a listed company (TSX: FORA). For understanding their main objectives, and drivers for decisions, just check their communications to share holders.

We read that the key drivers are MAU, the Monthly Active Users, and organic revenue growth (advertising and probably sponsoring as well).

Now, how could this help understanding moderation on this platform, where shareholders are in the game for traffic, growth and revenues. Just my personal guess (We don't want legal challenges to ScapeCrunch):
  • As a member, you will not make yourself popular by helping other users with references to other external sources of information, as this may create a leak on the forum's Monthly Active Users and help these other competitive platforms to grow at VerticalScope's expense. Conflict of interest?
  • The platform will thrive with a continued state of confusion regarding hobby related issues, as that will reliably keep users searching and help the growth of Monthly Active Users. While this statement may seem a bit of an overreach, there seems some credibility to a guess that the forum would not really look for fundamental solutions to the challenges in the hobby as some hobbyists (incl Yugang) would hope for. Conflict of interest?
  • You will not make yourself popular by proposing solutions that are not in the interest of sponsors. Conflict of interest?
  • Quality of content matters, reputation of contributors matters, but only if it attracts more active users who continue to come back. Other than that, this is all about traffic irrespective of quality or value to the hobbyist. Conflict of interest?
The operating costs for running a platform, assuming volunteers help, are not high. The admin on another forum shared that it will cost about 1500 pound sterling annually, so roughly 2000 USD. They have 8 sponsors, plus contributing members so that seems not a bad deal.

So indeed, if we want a platform that is a safe and productive place for our hobby, if we want to avoid misalignment with listed company shareholders, sponsors, and moderators then we should know that this is entirely possible from a financial point of view and there is no need for conflicts between business and hobby objectives.

Finally, there is nothing wrong with shareholders, sponsors or advertising. I am also not in any way suggesting that forum moderators who work for listed companies are not ethical, but I do suggest that they are aligned with the organisation goals and management. To a lesser extent this could happen when a forum is run by, or depends on commercial partners from the trade, as the saying goes there is no free lunch.

ScapeCrunch, I believe, balances financial necessities much better with hobbyists interests than any other current platform, but it is important to remind ourselves that it is not easy to keep a forum clean and aligned with hobbyists interests. I hope ScapeCrunch will grow, collect a reasonable revenue as needed for its success, but continues to be a platform for and by hobbyists.

Note:
I am quite passionate about this topic as I have had an extremely bad experience (btw not on TPT), nearly three years ago, proposing a new technology that was not in the interest of certain manufacturers, retailers or sponsors. I cannot prove that sponsors were involved, but up to three times I got no reply asking somebody who desperately tried to argue it could not work, if he was a hobbyists or rather from the trade defending his business. This thread led to my first official warning on that forum, an IP block on all my devices so that I could not login or even visit the site as a guest, the entire valuable (for the hobby) thread locked and later deleted, and a twice repeated advice to not post more innovations on that forum.

I went down this worm hole when I got banned… glad I’m on Scape Crunch! lol

Hmm, maybe it makes a difference if you’ve paid dues. I’ve wondered about that. All I’ve ever had was a recommendation for @Burr740 ‘s plants removed. I thought that would be okay because he was a member, but they said he would have to buy a sponsorship (or something like that) for that to be okay.
I like that this forum doesn’t have so many rules and that it isn’t for profit.

I went back to look at the conversation. I had also mentioned that he was working on getting a website going, and had also mentioned KGTropicals. I was told that it had been reported multiple times, but if I had just mentioned Joe without saying anything about the website it probably wouldn’t have been flagged. I was correct that he would have needed to buy a sponsorship (around $100/month at the time). There wasn’t any rancor in the conversation, just matter-of-fact info, but I dislike the vagueness of the vendor review rule and how it seems to get interpreted in different ways at various times. Seems to me that is part of the purpose of a forum.

Well, I haven't been banned yet, but my reply has apparently been deleted, like it never even existed. :( What a bunch of clowns!
VerticalScope uses AI.

From VerticalScope Taps TollBit to Unlock AI License Revenue and Protect Community Content

While they say they use it to block AI-generated content, I'm sure it's used to scan every post looking for stuff they don't want.

I was involved in selling them a company, and was a contractor for years with them. They are evil.

I wouldnt be surprised if that was AI but Im gonna say its the same mod already mentioned itt. The reason is because Gregg got banned before AI was a thing and his read just like that. He puts the whole "for repeated <made up bs> ..." reason for the corporate office. Just so the record states the user he banned was a gross repeat offender. He knows what hes doing isnt right

Im sure he reads this board since apparently Im on the must-not-be-named list now too, lol. Im sure my journals will quietly get whacked before long. Such childish immaturity and outright lies. Whatevva. Any of you with a tpt account you care about should be careful what you say

It probably was, but he did specifically tell me that I could mention you as long as I didn’t mention your website.

I do think they’re really hurting themselves by banning so many great people.

VerticalScope, the parent company of The Planted Tank, experienced a 90% decline in its stock value over four years due to competition in social media and declining advertising revenues.

OK theres some context I didnt have before. That is logical. So perhaps I misjudged him on that part of my point

I can clear something up about Yugang and Koan's deal. They havent always been against external links to vendors. Just ebay which did get spammed a lot. But theres always been a rule for using the selling board. If you never post on the main board and interact with the community that way, you cant just make posts in the sale board. You have to be an active community member

Flash forward to now, where I assume vendor links are prohibited,. The difference in you getting it explained to you and others straight up banned, is probably because you are an active member of the comnmunity. An account who's only post or two is linking a vendor, they're gonna get a lot less tolerance

If it sounds lijke Im bashing them in one ear and justifying them in another, its because both things are true in my opinion. I still think its the mod writing that repeat offender line

All this talk of TPT is reminding me back in those days how peaceful AquaticPlantCentral was prior to it sort of dying out. Not to derail the thread.

I had high hopes when BarrReport came out, but it also died out fairly quickly.

I think scape crunch is definitely the best forum thus far, in terms of aquascaping. Between moderation and site layout, it’s just better than any other platform/forum in my opinion.

I had high hopes when BarrReport

Barrreport is still a great archive, there's some great discussions on there 💯

No forum lasts forever, Barrreport is still here after 20+ years, activity reasonably petered out over time as both @plantbrain and active members went on to do other things with their lives. Our own @Art sold APC to a for-profit group a number of years ago when he was going on to new projects

UKAPS made it to 15 years before falling victim to an "in crowd" set of hard line moderators, fully lighting itself on fire 3 years back, and is now a shell of its former self. Still a great source of archives 👍

Fortunately we're just getting started here! But even more fortunately for us, @Art is a veteran of the old forums and has intentionally done everything he can to sidestep the pitfalls that kill off forums 💯

I predict we have a good 15 years to look forward to 😁 maybe more 🥃
