@Sb1415 Apologies I totally snagged the format of your journal post for this so thank you!

Many moons ago I was an active and contributing member on plantedtank.net, I think at one point I had around 14 scaped tanks going before burnout and life changes. Instead of weekends consisting of maintenance I transitioned to camping/boating and life has been great. I’ve always missed it. After downsizing and making a move to a new home I kept only a small 12x12 cube tank that started life as an amateur iwagumi layout, Seiryu and hairgrass only. I put it on the nightstand beside my bed and added some of my favorite Anubias and crypts from taken down tanks. Its been sitting there running for 5-6 years now, low light, top offs only w tap. Maintenance when it got out of control. Super old aquasoil now flattened out to a thick 4-5 inch thick layer in a perfect line front to back.

In Aug/Sept 25 had a bit of a health issue that kept me in bed for several weeks recovering while I looked at this sad little cube, mostly healthy but not truly thriving. No fertilizer being added for years, GDA covered anubias leaves that also were many years old and I thought to myself I should make this better… that was the tipping point. OK I’ll do a deep clean on the substrate, get some stems to throw in there, maybe get a carpet going. Tissue cultures/stems ordered and I got to work. No more top offs, 10% water changes instead. TDS ~900 when I started. Ultimately everything melted back and didn’t grow well. I’d been keeping the lighting so dim all these years to maintain just the crypts/epiphytes without it turning into a mess and I was ok with it again. That was the spark.

I decided I wanted to build out a new tank, most of my old hardware/tanks I had let go of in a bulk way so I was going to have to start new with everything sans some 5 gallon buckets of Amazonia that I’d placed in the basement of the new house.. Phoenix rising from the ashes? Most likely more like algae emerging from the depths. I still consider myself a beginner and maybe amateur at best so yeah…

So I got to work again reading, researching, what’s new, what has changed since I’ve been out of the loop for so long? Ooo dark start that sounds much better, in line CO2 diffusers cool! CO2 reactors, pretty awesome sounding, 2Hr aquarist read every article, and I’m back in baby!

Tank inspiration

None really hence no name, it fit right into a slot to occupy my mind from a not so great situation that I was in and I’m ok with that. Ultimately I’d like this to be a low-mid energy tank that can have minimal amounts of weekly maintenance while still looking the part. I’d prefer to keep it as simple as possible while still having some high tech bits. Get all the equipment out of the tank, co2, low-mid level lighting, minimal/simple fertilization. I got busy ordering equipment and started brainstorming layouts and what hardscape materials I could find. Instagram was my friend for a while, seems that everything that kept grabbing my attention were island style layouts with a very thin layer of sand surrounding. I’ve also always been partial to big chonky pieces of driftwood, I thought to go the manzanita route but wysiwyg pieces were fetching stupid prices. I ran across this ironwood in a listing and couldn’t let it go. The deep lines in the bark were just calling me so I quick snap ordered it before my brain could process dimensions, I knew it would fit but didn’t fully visualise how much it would ultimately limit the layout. I wanted to stay mostly inert with stone and eventually/begrudgingly ordered the tumbled lava stone with the intention of keeping it to a island/river layout style and mimicking some of my found instagram muse tanks. It will mostly likely end up more nature style although the start will be more Willy Wonka than anything. Thanks @Burr740 for that, I shopped like a kid in a candy store.

Thanks all for reading.

Filling in the gaps before I get my first algae outbreak. 😷

I mentioned above about not thinking the chonky wood through, also completely overestimated what I was going to be able to do in this footprint. 90cm great! 30cm deep/high a little tight.

It actually ended up that I had EVERYTHING except for the tank which I’d decided to source from a local-ish shop so I could drive and pick up. So in the meantime I built a cardboard version so I could play a bit. It’s been so long and of course my brain dimensions with so many plans did not match reality dimensions at all.

IMG_6835.webp

So as I got down to it I quickly realized it was going to be quite difficult to maintain a healthy planting area and I couldn’t use a good slope in the back because it’s so shallow… determined though I iterated through multiple tries ultimately deciding to let go of having a large sandy area around the front. I’d have to push everything forward and plant behind.
I’d already figured chonky wood could only go a few ways so decided to shelf ‘practice’ until the actual tank arrived.

Tank finally arrives on the evening that the winter storm is coming up the east coast. I had a nice long weekend snowed in to get things finalized and dark start going.

Final layout w/bagged soil

Few views of planting areas. The wood is hollow so decided to plant in the recesses at back to add some additional plant mass.

Adding in Uns Bora sand

Drizzling a bit of Uns Kona

Flooded it, cranked the filter and covered it up. Toward the end of week 3 I did take a toothbrush to the wood fungus. Figuring it was going to be 2-3 more weeks before the cleanup crew goes in I didn’t want to look at it.

That brings us to today. I think I had a mild panic attack when fed-ex arrived. Good grief I actually have to plant this thing now!
Seriously though it’s amazing how zen it can be when you are totally focused on a task wanting to do the best job possible.

IMG_6923.webp
or you can rock out to a nice live playlist. Halfway ish there.

I did decide to move the outflow out front, figured I’d get a little better flow not being blocked by the eventual plant mass.

I’m looking forward to seeing it with the lights on. What do you think of the UNS Pro Tubing? I replaced my clear tubing with it and really like the look, softness and pliability.
It is great… except when you need to put quick disconnects on your lines AND you need to then prime the stupid thing to run in a 5 gallon bucket while you plant the tank lol.
That was my first mistake of the day… of many.

Now that's the way to start a journal!

Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Thanks man! Quite honestly 2 minutes after I posted this 2 fed ex trucks and an Amazon truck pulled in as if they were on parade. Not all for me but they had my “Burr box” and last quick connect.

Ive had a busy time since posting but got things mostly in hand.

I think i’m going to have to pull the oase/co2 back out. The in line diffuser was working initially and then suddenly I noticed lack of micro bubbles coming out. Already pulled the tank/reg out and tested past the bubble counter into a cup. Not sure if maybe the check valve failed in some funky way. Pressure builds up at the diffuser because I hear a nice pop when I eject the line. Tired of fusing with it for the evening. Hopefully I can get it sorted before it’s time tomorrow. Almost tempted to order another just in case.

This is a bit of a skip to the beginning but what the hey. It’s still clearing from the planting and complete water change. Another package arrives tomorrow with mini pellia and Poaceae sp. to put in that naked spot behind the still folded from shipping lone Kimberly. So many plants hiding in here behind/in the wood! Surprise of the day goes to Amcella Repens, yikes I didn’t know these stems were small trees 😂

Co2 diffuser sorted, bought an extra to swap out between cleanings. Thinking is the old one just became clogged from the dark start. Looks like this is a monthly thing…

Finished up the planting for now. Water is starting to clear up and appear more polished. I boiled some mini catappa leaves to help drive the ph down a little more for the cleaning crew. I think it brings a more natural look too.
Changed the “daytime” backlight to a light blue, the green was making it look a little washed out/hazy.
Thus far the Tonina is the only plant showing signs of struggle. Getting a little yellowing on lower leaves. Could be the early co2 issue or lower lighting from first few days.
I couldn’t fully remove 100% of the tap from the dark start so I’ve ended up with kh a hair above 2.

Should have cleaned my fingerprints!

Things continue to settle in. I think adding purigen into the filter during the dark start stunted my cycle a bit or I just don’t wait long enough. I had to try to schedule the planting for a time when I could take off so…
I’m seeing 0 ppm ammonia but 1 ppm nitrites in my testing this week. Piling up nitrates too, most likely more than I’m dosing w apt3. Adding 4.5 ml 3-4 times a week so far.
Keeping an eye on on it, if it gets too high I’ll pop a water change. I did an additional 100% this week to clear more tannins so I should probably leave it for a bit if I can. I may pull the filters from my cube and squeeze them into the filter this weekend to help.

I’ve got a decent ph drop dialed in so hoping that holds. Firing co2 3 hours before lights on and checker is lime/yellow at on cycle. No stocking just yet sans some snails so not concerned just with too much yet.
Ph @ 6 am flat 7
Ph @ 5 pm 5.7

Wondering if the little bit of nitrites might be the cause of the yellowing on the tonina. I topped a few stems a couple days ago and replanted. They seem to be holding color so far. Will do the rest this weekend and float the stumps to see if I can get some runners before I chuck them.

It’s time to top the rotala ‘Vietnam’ to double and rearrange the purple bamboo to start getting things thicker. Amcella Repens is about to break out of the tank so we’ll see how that goes. Going to let 2 stems try to grow out and keep one submerged in front. Pogostemon in the back is looking good although growing slower, I’ll let that break out as well as the purple bamboo beside it.
May move the single Kimberly to the left behind the wood more. That stem is early in line to be removed entirely… just a bit too big with my limited planting area.
Letting things in front grow for a bit before they eventually get mowed down to thicken.

Seeing the first pearling this week although it’s only from damaged leaves at this point 🤣

Still a little fungus from the wood, algae is negligible so far. Shhh. I was hoping to add some shrimp already but oh well. At least the water clarity is getting right now!

IMG_6993.webp

Emergent growth inbound (hopefully!) if anyone has tips on how to make the transition easier I’d love to hear it. Humidity in my house is between 50-60%.

Hidden behind the wood is a stand of limno ‘mini’ and Didiplis. The lone blyxa ‘recurvifolia’ in the wood isn’t doing well and melting back.
