Keeping aquarium sand clean - any good solutions?

Not sure I can help much with this. Only to say that reef aquarists only use sand and they often get diatoms initially. The typical remedy is to wait them out. They tend to disappear as quickly as they appear. Probably due to being eaten by something that grows more slowly.

What sand is this? It's very coarse.
