Anybody else stay up late to watch the IAPLC rankings. As usual, my choices would have been different. Some scapes ranked in the 40s got picked by some judges as the best, so at least I'm not alone in that. Highest ranking by a U.S. contestant was Ryan Noel at, I believe, 31. Congrats to Ryan.

I feel like rank 9 could of scored higher if his front row of plants was more randomized.
I had to look at that tank twice and read the title, which was off my screen when I first saw it. I couldn't understand why there was so much red in the foreground when I first saw it, as it didn't look like the foreground belonged in the same scape, but then realized the point was to pull the eye down 'beneath the lake'. I thought this layout was quite clever, and agree the lack of randomness in the lake diminished the overall natural impression.

So many amazing scapes, it’s a lot to dig into at once.

First quick click through loving #7 out of top 10. The Lilly is awesome and maybe to perfectly shaped but is a great effect.

#44 I think, simple, bold round stone layout.

#107 Super cool almost fish eye effect with the hardscape.

This year there are fewer tanks in the top 20 that I truly dislike. That's unusual.
I haven't had a chance to look through many.
I'm more old school and prefer a little less over stuffed and clearer lines.
I really like 13 and 14.
Just not a fan of 3 and 4
9 honestly.... while it doesn't have the clear lines and flow I usually like, it's undeniably brilliant, has made me think the most, and is the one I've looked at the longest.

I feel like rank 9 could of scored higher if his front row of plants was more randomized. it kinda teetered on the edge of being like a fruit stand.
I think it's supposed to look like the over grown edge of a pond, but I think you're right. Despite what the effect is supposed to achieve, the rules and flow of nature scapes don't care about artistic statement as much.

I am a fan of 44. I also really like 20, 17, and 10. I thought it was sad that someone used AI and that their disqualification didn’t open up a spot for someone else.

There's some nice tanks in top 100. Some of those jungle tanks are nuts, but they always are. There so over stuffed they turn a 80g into 30g of water in end . Seems there's 60lbs in wood and 20lb in rocks. I see some pre planting pics had huge rocks and huge wood. Its gone after moss man comes by lol. They could have used bricks or piece of styrofoam glued to base of tank and got the same look. Jungle tanks on most of the contest are moss, moss, moss, ferns, sags, maybe 2 stems plants and more moss . Without moss there wouldn't be a jungle/nature scape in top 50

I'm not skilled enough to point out the detailed differences. I see many variations that seem to mimic last year's winner's style.

What intrigued me the most is the audio system behind Mrs. Amano.
I see very recycled looks over and over in the aiplc and aga contest for years. even saw 2 tanks that look like the same person did the wood layout just to close and same ole same ole. Only saw a few that looked really unique for me other than the normal moss land lol. These 2 tanks this year, seen this look over and over like a broken record stop copying everyone else!
I was surprised to see Josh sims at 230 instead of top 10

Well, I'm quite partial to Brazilian style scapes so #8 was my favorite. It seems the last few years, the dark forbidding forest scapes with heavy use of moss and other slow growers dominate the top rankings, but it's just not the look I prefer. I want to see better use of color, light, and reflection, with more selective dark nooks and crannies.

Aga has a new category that I agree needed to be done years ago "the classic" aka the old school, For me it was the 2000s simple layouts, plants and wood. It was more about who could grow / had the cool looking plants other than v shapes and golden ratios. That's made aquascaping today more of an art class now imo. Way before diorama and jungle moss man took over moss was on top of wood not covering 90% of the tank.

The classic
This category emphasizes the types of aquariums that celebrate the very element that the Aquatic Gardener’s Association was founded on: aquatic plants. Planted and cultivated with skillful care, these compositions differ from the contest’s existing Aquatic Garden category in that while they still incorporate hardscape elements, there is a foundational focus on the plants, which welcomes a broad range of artistic approaches.

Current aquascaping trends lean towards dramatic scale, extensive forced perspective, and highly stylized compositions. These layouts will still apply to the Aquatic Garden category, but are not components of this new Classic category. Classic Style entries are judged by their quality of plant husbandry, balance, and overall natural impression, rather than visual illusion or perceived size. Classic layouts should be more representative of a 1:1 scale, where the layout is close to the same size as it would be found in nature.

It's good stuff overall, yet I find myself scrolling without pause like a teenager on tiktok. I look at these and remember Tom barr calling it the moss competition. Some great ones too like the 9th and its optical illusion, but then I also remember Bart Laurens 'a judge sitting in front of your tank is very different from submitting a picture'.
