Journal 135g High Tech Planted

With focused negligence the 20g moved past its green water stage and has experienced a BOOM in shrimp population.

I recently add 3 swords and some other plants from my wife's 10g shrimp tank. Her tank was over crowded.

Unfortunately the shed will not have space for the 6' 135g šŸ˜ā˜ ļø so likely the 20g will be the largest fw tank for awhile.

Here is the 10g, i like to to look at it. It gets shrimp king added to wc water and a pump or two of marcus fish tanks green fertilizer weekly.

The iPhone was struggling to focus. I need the dlsr for the little fellas to really capture them.

There's blue, dark red, yellow, orange, and various hues of those from intense to almost clear.

Its a standard 10g with a hygger light on a 12 hour schedule with an oase 100 canister filter. Compost w/ bdbs cap for the sub.

4-6 cory's and at some point there will be 15-24 strawberry rasboras added, when they're back in stock at aqua huna.

Here is the 10g today. Such a favorite little tank of mine.

I love how these (some sort of rotala i think) peek over the top of the scape.

Theres ~30 rasboaras and 5 Pygmy cories and a whole bunch of shrimp, yet you can still look in at times and see very little life. Especially after lights have just gone on.

This is going to seem basic and stupid, but.... my tank is slightly larger than yours, but I've put off getting any livestock. I have a few reasons but mostly it is because I'm not sure how to best do a 50% water change and not swing the pH or temp so much as to not kill stuff. My tank has no heater and this time of year, water comes out of the tap warmer than it is in the tank with the AC on in the house. How do you do your water changes?

the main secret in this tank is nothing is super sensitive. It's a "middle energy" tank with a soil capped sub.

About once a month I change out ~6 or 7g. During late spring, summer, early fall I have the heater off and and our "tap water" is a well. We are high up in the blue ridge mountains and the TDS out the tap is around 20 and I tested that the water is soft.

In the winter time I have to blend the water from the tap as the cold water is ~44 degrees F. I just get it close by feel and let it rip.

The tank has a oase 100 canister filter that definitely helps me carry the large bioload. The inkbird keeps the tank very close to 74 as the heater is also oversized (one from my last reef tank, 40 breeder).

If you can keep it within 10 degrees, I dare say you would be fine. The 20g I have (still on the floor and unloved) our first winter in the house, that tank dropped to around 50 degrees. The room got much colder than I was expecting and I didn't have the heater turned on yet. Wouldn't rec that, but the shrimp rode it out fine.

Since no CO2 is being done, I don't monitor or care about PH in this tank.

Hope that helps! What livestock are you considering? I'm really loving this triple combo of tiny schooling fish, tiny cories, tiny shrimp.

I used to live high up in the Blue Ridge of Virginia. I lived in New Castle for almost 3 years and then Radford until 2006. I terribly miss living in the mountains. It's absolutely magical. Life called though.

Some shrimp and mini corys like you. Maybe some other small fish. I like blue eye Rainbows or small Rasboras.

Years ago when I was big into the hobby, we only had cherry shrimp and Amanos. The crystal reds were newer and so expensive. The ones people now toss in the trash were $100 each. These multi-colored Neocardina weren't around. I'd love to try those. I think they are a bit larger and hardier than the Cardina. I need to read up.
