Yugang Reactor fills with air overtime?

Hey guys, I've made a couple of yugang reactors some horizontal, some vertical (soda bottle with a hole in it).

I've noticed a reoccuring issue constantly in that it will eventually fill up with air (oxygen) from plants pearling.

Once the co2 + oxygen concentration gets high enough, Oxygen from plant pearling will eventually make its way into the reactor. After a few days, this severely reduces its efficiency.

You would think the oxygen just gets pushed out by the co2 coming, but plants pearling will kinda just refill it up extremely fast.

Is yugang better in lower light tanks where you won't get intense pearling? I usually find co2 misting much more consistent in this case and might swap back to just using a ceramic diffuser for consistency. I only have 10 gallon tanks... a ceramic diffuser is fine, its just easy to nuke your tank with too much co2 where yugang limits your co2 ppm based on reactor size.
 
Hi, the issue with overflow is that it uses an insane amount of co2. Like 3-4 bubbles per second on my 10 gallon. This drains the tank really fast.
You lower CO2 to have it purge a few bubbles every 30 to 45 seconds.

First, this is just a principle of all closed pipe things in our aquariums. Vertical reactors run into the exact same issue (they fill with O2/N2 gasses over time to a certain level). Things like pearling might increase the rate a bit, too.

There are two ways to set up a horizontal reactor, one where 100% of the CO2 gets dissolved (regulator mode), but requires manual purging 1-2 times per week to reset the gas bubble. This is a pretty uncommon way to use them.

The most common way is in overflow mode, where you inject some excess CO2 to help purge the gas pocket naturally on its own. You adjust the strength of your gas pocket by rotating your reactor (this only works if your reactor has an offset exit).

The gas pocket changes throughout the day. At 9am, you won't see much purging. By noon, you'll see more purging occur. By 3pm, your purging will be at max.

The goal is to adjust your reactor/regulator so that it purges only every minute or so, just a bit, around 1-3pm (towards the end of the CO2/Light period), AND to either rotate your reactor to adjust it, or properly size your reactor so that it reaches your desired CO2 injection rate.

On my tanks, once I get my reactor setup, it literally never needs to be changed again. It just sits there, purges every few minutes, and most of my CO2 gets absorbed and I never need to mess with it again. Very consistent for high tech, high energy tanks. But takes a little understanding/experience to set them up; honestly, I'm not so sure that horizontal reactors are easy for people to understand...

Seen as this a new yugang thread, hope everyone doesn't mind if I ask a couple of questions, as it may benefit others too. I'm close to focusing my attention on building my first reactor and will look to gain a greater understanding of exactly how it works. To me at this point, its all theoretical.

  • I will have a spare inline diffuser which I plan to use for the method of injecting the CO2 (obviously without the actual ceramic diffuser). Anyone else used this method? Any specific design tips on using that method. I'll be using a bypass for sure so I guess as long as its implemented after that.
  • I had planned to just use a standard PVC pipe. Is it worth being new to all this to obtain a clear pipe if I can to make it easier to see what's going on or is it not really necessary once you have it setup and have a bit of a handle on the flow?
  • Overflow mode - I assume if you have it sized right (I'll take @Naturescapes_Rocco suggestion of 15), that as long as you provide atleast enough co2 to cover that or above, it automatically goes into overflow mode? Do you then just adjust the CO2 based on the frequency of purges?
  • Flow intensity - One of the reasons for adding a bypass so I can control flow. The reactor will be used in conjunction with 2 x netlea G2 pre-filters and a jebao mdp 6500 pump so I can adjust the flow rate a fair bit. This may relate to my question before about having a clear pipe so i can see the flow. How do you initially setup the flow rate? Is there a rule of thumb or just trial and error?


    Apologies if these questions are obvious. It will be a case of once you setup one and play around with it, it'll all seem straight forward.

Yes, it does work, but if your reactor isn't on a "bypass" arm in your flow circuit, then the full flow of water can make the bubbles really loud. Specifically, I used the GLA inline diffuser with no ceramic part, just like your idea, but had to switch it out for a different solution because the rush of water carrying the bubbles was loud. Also, if your flow is high enough, the rush of water will atomize/dissolve/sweep away your incoming CO2 injection -- and carry it right out of your reactor's exit (if the flow through your reactor is too fast).

If you were to set up your filter system with a controllable bypass (see this post here for more examples)

I know this is a bit controversial, but I think everyone should consider a clear reactor. Especially if it's your first, it will help BIG TIME for identifying issues and sorting things out in the long run.

But remember, CO2 is fairly cheap -- would you be willing to pay an "extra" $15 per month to have total piece of mind that you're injecting enough? If so, it's not such a bad thing to have your reactor purge a bit more frequently, ensuring that your CO2 stays solid and consistent.

Most regulators on the market actually have trash needle valves that prevent fine tuning, so many users will attempt to "reduce" their CO2 purging frequency, but accidentally dial it way down. The good news is, with horizontal regulators setup in overflow mode, you can't really "over" inject CO2 beyond what you have it rotated to. You could have it purging every 5 seconds, but if the purged bubbles aren't getting atomized or swept in the current (bonus points if you have a gentle flow that allows them to exit straight up to the surface) you cannot over-inject your tank. I love that everyone is trying this setup out. I think it's the best! Been rocking it for 2 years now, and just setup my new 120cm tank with two prefilters and a pump, too.

If you REALLY want to optimize your CO2 setup, get a splitter and have your reactor on a totally different exit (meaning, have two lily pipes returning water back to your aquarium, like this:)

The lily pipe return without reactor is your "main" pipe for 75% of your filter system's flow; the ball valve on that line will let you fine tune how much flow goes into your reactor line instead.

By having this type of two-lily-pipe-return, you can be sure that your reactor's CO2 purging doesn't get atomized/dissolved/swept into the tank. It stays completely silent, never changes, and prevents over-gassing of your tank, too.

IF you wanted to have your water return to your tank via one lily pipe (boo!), it works, too:

But when the reactor's purged bubbles meet the 'main' water stream, they can often become atomized/dissolved/make noise. It still works fine (I had this setup for 2 years) but it's not the 100% ideal setup, IMO.

I use an inline diffuser (minus ceramic) to inject the CO2 just before the reactor and it is actually pretty much silent to my ears. I suspect that flow rates are key to this. I keep flow nice and gentle through the reactor. The diffuser is injecting around 6-7 bubbles per second (in the bubble counter) too, as it is a large tank. It works brilliantly for me.
My reactor does fill up to a certain extent over time with other less-soluble gasses but because I run it on overflow mode, with a bubble purge occuring around once every minute it seems to keep high enough concentrations of CO2 within that bubble to continue to work as effectively as I need it to. Maybe not as absolutely as efficiently as before but as near to that as makes no difference to me.
I have posted this picture many times before but I will do it again so that folks can envisage what I am trying to explain.

Its my only reactor but I am really pleased that I chose to use transparent pipe for the reactor to be able to check what's going on within.

I had planned to include a bypass arm so that's a certainty. I had read one of your earlier posts you referenced regarding the designs and more importantly which ones not to use so the flow is optimized - water always takes least resistance right!

This post also has me thinking about the dual outlet. Currently I have the one outlet and a wavemaker on the other end but I'm not super keen on them and I think having the full control of the flow through one system/pump makes sense, particularly when you can fine tune the flow at each end.

The design immediately above with the dual outlet and the valve on the second outlet make the most sense to me, more so than the one where the valve is after the reactor. Only in my head I know as once the flow is running, theoretically they will be very similar. I would have thought in the design above, if the CO2 was injected just before the reactor, which was only ever set to have gentle flow, that it would be ok. I guess only one way to find out.

I think this post helps me make up my mind regarding the clear reactor. I have a normal 2" pvc tube on hand but I can use that for a second reactor on another tank once I know what I'm doing.

Yes i would definitely err on the side of caution in regard to ensuring enough CO2 is injected. Which is why i figured you push the CO2 a bit more than enough. I imagine for every single one of these, particularly all the DIY ones, you would need a little trial and error, as each configuration is different.

I've been testing the 2 netlea pre-filter/pump setup for a couple months now on a spare tank and love it. Hardly ever have to touch the 2nd pre-filter and even the first one, its just a quick disconnect, rinse and drop back in.

Thanks Hamfist, yes I think I've seen that pic before. It proves there are many ways to achieve the objective in this hobby.
Particularly as I'll be using/building the reactor for the first time, having a clear pipe will be super helpful. Even just for dialling in the flow.

I don't think it really saves more co2 since you need to have it on overflow mode to function correctly.

The only real benefit seems to be no bubbles and a limit on max co2 ppm so you don't gas your fish.

An inline diffuser seems to have the benefit of co2 misting which increases efficiency.

I think for small tanks, 10 gallons, a regular ceramic diffuser seems to do the job well enough as long as you turn it on a few hours before lights?

That's my conclusion so far.

Misting does not increase efficiency , either of absorption or use of CO2.

An inline diffuser can maintain stable levels of CO2 in a smaller tank, if well maintained, although this is not equally true for an in-tank diffuser.

How you choose to inject CO2 just depends on your priorities. Lots of people don't mind bubbles, or the regular cleaning that a diffuser requires 💯💯

Didn't tom barr release a report a decade ago that given the same co2 ppm, co2 misting produced 25% more oxygen in the water column due to increased photosynthesis?

I used to do very heavy misting in farm tanks and it did grow a lot of stem plants much better. Tbh I was adding a S**t ton of co2 and had no way to measure it as well tho.

Does it look like my tanks need CO2 misting? :) Because all of these are 100% dissolved CO2, no mist at all, with only horizontal reactors.

There hasn't been any peer reviewed evidence that CO2 mist (which doesn't exist in natural waterways anyway) is somehow 25%, 100%, or 1000% (as some claimed on the Barr report) better than dissolved CO2, from what I can find. It's all speculation by hobbyists at home!

All of these tools/equipment (diffusers, reactors, etc) are just tools to help our plants grow, and they ALL have both pros and cons.
If I say "I'll never use ceramic diffusers again" (which I wont lol), that doesn't mean they wouldn't be a good option for someone else in their scenario.

So, if you just don't like horizontal reactors, don't use them? If you had as good of results as I did above with a ceramic diffuser, stick with that. No need to stress about equipment you don't like or don't understand, especially if you have your own preferences to begin with.
