I imagine someone at Chihiros gets their hand slapped for not making all that clear in the first email. There was quite the wave of paniic going around due to that poorly thought out communication.
Any guesses as to how this will effect pricing?

Well, the Aquatic Studio pricing was a little lower than US distributer pricing, but then there was the high shipping cost if you weren't meeting the $200 free shipping threshold.Any guesses as to how this will effect pricing?
Maybe it will lead to some price competition amongst retailers?
I wouldn't get your hopes up on that. The profit margins for lighting tend to be pretty abysmal; I couldn't lower the prices of our lights in our store even if I wanted to be more competitive. Unless something drastically changes on a wholesale level I would not expect prices to fall.

You can probably speak to this as well. Many brands, these days, keep very tight control over the retail pricing of their products, and that's not just aquarium related products. And honestly, that may be, at least in part, to help protect their retail partners against the likes of Amazon.
Exactly. Some brands implement MAP (minimum advertised pricing) for their products, but many don't. As a retailer, I like MAP pricing because it means someone can't undercut you if they decide to use the product as a loss leader to drive traffic or try to take sales from you. It also makes sense for companies who retail and wholesale. I sell 2Hr Aquarist products in my store and follow MAP pricing. It would suck if a customer googled a product on my shelf and found out it was cheaper online (although this happens with many brands, Chewy and Amazon will be the death of us all). It would also be a detriment to 2Hr Aquarists retail side if they allowed people to sell their products at any price they want.
At face value it looks like this does nothing to help the consumer but in the long run it does. A race to the bottom for pricing helps no one in the end. For example Ubers were cheap until they put taxi companies under. Then they raised their prices and there isn't enough competition to stop them.

They had actually already sent a tracking number and said they were prepping it to ship. I thought that they might have found a problem, like they ran out of US plugs or it was damaged. Oh well, too bad…
It is doable, and I’m sure will become easier as more people have to do it.
I have created an elite version of the Chihiros dosing control.
It is tailored to my tank though, so not a lot of use to others.
It combines the spreadsheet work that someone here has done, to work out steady state levels of doses and nutrient swings throughout the week/s.
When you put in a dosing figure, it tells you the eventual nutrient build up for each channel and the minimum levels post water change and the maximum levels prior to the next water change.
It suggests pre-loading doses and then the required reduction in daily dose.
So as you play around with dosing amounts in the app, you can watch the nutrient swings and maximum levels change. Then when you’re happy, it programs it in and you select how many doses per day and the window for dosing.
It also automatically keeps dosing from each channel 20 minutes apart, delaying the second dose, or third etc so that channels never fire close enough to interfere with each other.
There is already at least 3 Github repos with commands for Chihiros products, so once you know your products mac identifier (found with your router software or a simple command), all the coding is ready to go! Then it is just your imagination and patience to test each aspect individually! I have just improved the calibration profess to be more suited to my dose amounts and also to account for the density of the dosing liquid. Yet to test it out though.
This was all done purely with one short session using a bluetooth command ‘sniffer’ on an android device, then telling Claude what I wanted.
Trial and error, and never letting the system go live straight to the tank whenever something new is added.
I sit beakers under the pumps and measure the output over a few days, pouring them into the tank, then once I’m happy it’s good, I connect it up.
The joy of the custom system, is once it is set up, it is so simple to modify and adapt it.
Of course it does cost the time to learn and create, but this is just from a simple
esp32 commanding over bluetooth.
