A Field Trip through Florida Flora and Fauna

OK that's what I thought 👍 looks so different from the other Proserpinaca shot, I guess immersed in the wild?
P. palustris growing wild in bog-like conditions in-situ still have broader leafs. I believe this one is Proserpinaca pectinata based on the larger internodes and finer pinnate leaf shape.

I’m often out and about working in the field and stumble upon breathtaking examples of often overlooked and under appreciated slices of nature that Florida has to offer.

My neck of the woods is filled with marsh/wetlands ripe with both native and invasive wildlife of all flavors; I want to start a thread where I can document and share.

I’ll update this thread whenever I capture something noteworthy. Much of what catches my eye is aquatic flora, but I try and document anything captivating. I hope you find this as beautiful and fascinating as I do.

Your pictures are beautiful. I love hiking and checking out all the little detail in the micro plants that everyone overlooks.

On this weeks adventures in “trudging through ditches and reclaimed wetlands which may or may not encroach on my lunch break”…

And the real surprise… unconfirmed, but narrowed down by multiple Ludwigia keys,

Ludwigia glandulosa ssp. brachycarpa

Well, beautiful and relaxing. I'm jealous you get to do this during your lunch break. I would come back to work a different person if I did this...

Any change of taking some cuttings home to grow out in the tank?

Man, you are quite lucky, as I've said before. I would be bringing home so many stems to try out underwater...

You never know, you may find a new species! Bacopa jhardeesonii sounds good!

This thread is what I’ve been splitting my aquarium time with. Primary mission was discovering native North American flora that would grow submerged and eventually introduce into the hobby for all to enjoy. Sub-missions include discovering all amazing flora Florida has to offer, mostly focusing on lowland emergent wetland, bog, swamp, marsh, etc. basically anything that likes its feet wet.

In the process, I’ve connected with some botanists/biologists in the area and co-authored a paper on Centipeda minima, or spreading sneezeweed. Yes it’s as exciting as it sounds (not really).
