Journal 120 Dutch Ft. Yugang Reactor (Horizontal CO2 Reactor)

Progress on the 100. Finally. What a nightmare it has been.View attachment 6911
What's been most challenging for you lately to get the tank to this stage again?

Any key takeaways for the less experienced? (me)

The tank looks fantastic man, well done!

The sheer volume of water changes. It's exhausting with the 3 other tanks which need their weekly changes. Scrubbing algae off the back wall was brutal as well. The black material really holds on to it.

Made damn sure to hold nutrients at my set levels via 140 gallon water changes. 90 gallons on normal change day and another 50 gallons mid week. Double dosing micros after the big change and 1 more normal dose on day 3. Then a single dose after mid week change and 1 more a day before the big change. All the while shooting video.

I want to relax a bit, but I'm afraid to lol.

Wow, a lot of work with multiple tanks especially.
The hard work looks like it's paying off.

Do you think you've determined the cause of your issues, or still not quite sure?

Loving the YouTube videos by the way

Well, I'm pretty positive I was under dosing. I was trying @Burr740 routine and wasn't doing it correctly. Then the substrate swap pretty much sealed the deal. I definitely want to get back to his routine, but I'm going to plug along with the front loading until I'm confident things are stable.

I've gone back to his routine on the 120 as a test. So far, nothing crazy is happening. I was twirling algae daily before the deep clean and replant. Fingers crossed. I'm dosing pretty heavy in it this week just to see what happens.

I keep moving things around and in and out, but tank health is looking good. I'm happy to report I finally got ahold of Erio Feather Duster and a bonus Erio type as well. Why that excites me so much I'll never know, but giddy for now. Tank layout is meh ATM and it is looking like my Blue Hygro is going to remain on the darker side. Why won't they stay light green in my tanks? Anyways, just did a big move session hence the bed head look.1000000626.webp

The 120 substrate was swapped and it's doing better than it was. The preexisting algae is still working magic, but not as bad as before. Has to be a good thing right 😆. This week we will pop all those old infested leaves off and get the algae off the back wall. I may even dose some algaefix since all the fish have been moved. Hoping for small improvements each week.

My life for the last month or 2 has been endless water changes. I'm exhausted! No end in sight.

Algaefix is lethal for clado, useless for any other type ime. Pre-water change Id turn the flow off and direct spray peroxide/glut on affected areas. Liberally. Let it stand 30-45 minutes then proceed with the wc
Good to know. Thank you. Excel it is.

Im sure its been a frustrating process but thats a pretty fast turnaround from being borderline-decimated with algae just 2-3 weeks ago
For sure, a harsh reminder to never slack. Elbows always have to be lubed 😆.

Also a good example of how applying the basics can fix a potentially catastrophic situation. That algae moves fast. Imagine how things would've spiraled in 2-3-4 more weeks if you hadnt stepped in with more aggressive cleaning/pruning, a little spot treating and extra ferts to shore the plants up. Ive seen people quit the over less...

The spray bottle with Glut really knocked things down. Magic really. You know this craft well my friend.

I remember a post from Tom Barr back in the day that has stuck with me for some reason. He showed a tank with green water and overrun with algae because he was out of town, and he just did two days of thorough cleaning with 90% water changes in a row and the tank was back to immaculate.

Now I freak out a little less when my aquarium gets a little unruly because I know it's just a couple days of work from being back to good shape.
