I made a horizontal reactor for my 75 gallon tank.

I posted photo in my tank journal, but thought it would also benefit in the equipment forum for people searching down the road…

Thanks to @Yugang for developing this concept.

I am converting my tanks to Horizontal reactors for CO2 injection.



Eliminates the visible microbubbles in the tank.



Greatly decreases risk of accidental overdosing of CO2 to the tank, as excess injection of CO2 makes large bubbles that float to thesurface quickly and disperses quickly.



Eliminates need to clean ceramic diffuser element, bleaching and dechlor….



Under $30.00 for a 75 gallon tank assuming you already have an inline co2 diffuser…



Basically a horizontal reactors for functions by having a controlled surface area of 100% CO2 over the top of a moving body of aquarium reactor. The surface area controls the ppm of co2 that will be absorbed by the water, just like it controls the rate of outgassing from your tank.



The formula for determining size of reactor is to take the length multiplied by the front to back width of the tank and divide by 17.7.



L X W/17.7



Then determine the internal diameter of the pipe you are planning on using.



Surface Area of reactor chamber divided by length= internal diameter



SA/L=D



Which algebra converts to a more useful SA/D=L.



On my 75 gallon tank, 46.25x16.25=751.563



751.6/17.7=42.463



42.5/2=21.25



So I used 2 inch PVC drain pipe, 21 inches long.



10 ft of PVC was $13.00



$2.60 worth of pipe



2 2” PVC couplers at 2.18 each



$4.36



2 2” - 1 “ reducing bushings. 3.10 each



$6.20



2 1” to 3/4 threaded bushings. 2.78



$5.56



My Oase Biomaster 350 hoses fit snugly over a 3/4 inch Pex Hose barb and will be secured with Stainless hose clamps.



2 3/4 MPT to 3/4 PEX adapter $3.81

2 stainless hose clamps $1.88 ea

2 2” pvc j hook hangers, 1.38

$32.86 total cost, at least in March of 2025. With inflation and tariffs marching on it could be twice as much in a few years.. or months… who knows…

I used 2 pvc jhook hangers to mount to inside back wall of my cabinet.

I liked it so much I made horizontal reactors for my two 29 gallon tanks…

On these two I installed airline valves in to the pvc pipe instead of using an inline diffuser with the ceramic element removed and I like this a whole lot more. The airline valves are designed to be screwed into pipe by drilling a hole in the pipe and chuck the valve into your drill and it self taps into the hole.

Used in fishrooms to run airline to all tanks from a linear air pump.

I used 2 metal pex bend supports to return the hose to the canister.

I mounted these on the backs of my cabinets. My canisters are on the outside of these two cabinets.
