Dark Start Method - avoid algae and melting plants

That's a big reason why I tried $30 of BDBS inert sand in my second 39gal tank... traumatized from the cost of buying enough aquasoil to fill a 140gal 😭

I use a mix of equal parts Amazonia 2, Safe T Sorb and activated Carbon in mesh bags, 3/4 of an inch thick laid on top of UGF plates and capped with BDBS .

The Activated Carbon is added to give a porous surface for bacterial growth, not for chemical filtration…

A single bag of Amazonia 2 has been used for two 75 gallon tanks and two 29s and has plenty. left over.

35 lbs Safe T Sorb $13.00.

My thought is the UGF washes the safety Sorb and Aquasoil with WC ferts to recharge them. The Aquasoil gives an initial boost out of the gate.
