Hello Welcome, markn2025

Here you go! 💯

😅 Well, the Fluval Roma 240 surface area is listed as 120cm * 40cm or 4800 sq. cm.

So,

  • For a pH drop target 1.5, the Reactor_Surface_Area is estimated at Tank_Surface_Area 4800 / 17.7, or 271 sq. cm
Using a standard 5cm / 2" diameter PVC pipe, the length would need to be 271 / 5 = 54 cm, or 21".

  • For a pH drop target 1.2, the Reactor_Surface_Area is estimated at Tank_Surface_Area 4800 / 35.4 or 135.5 sq cm, 27cm long x 5cm dia

  • For a pH drop target 0.9, the Reactor_Surface_Area is estimated at Tank_Surface_Area 4800 / 70.8 or 68 sq cm, 13 cm long x 5cm dia

Haha well that makes a huge amount of sense. My calcs got me to 5.4m so I was out by a factor of 10 😂

I'm not pushing too hard for growth so I think 1.2 ph sounds good, so I'll aim for 27cm. Thanks so much for the help

Do you have any experience doing this with a fluval fx4? It feels like a very small reactor to cope with the high levels of flow.

I'll do some more research into the mechanics of it and the parts I need but sounds doable

Yes it does need to be gentle flow, if you get noise or you feel like it's pushing too hard then you may benefit from putting it on a simple bypass, like this one

The word simple is relative 😂😂

This looks great. Do you happen to have a parts list or guide for it? I assume the logic is that some flow goes through the smaller tube so there's a slower flow in the bigger tube? I would need the hose barbs to be 1 inch to fit the fx4
