Nutrient Deficiency?

So I am trying to trouble shoot an issue with the Ludwigia Red Skeleton I planted. Since it appears to be a “newer” plant there isn’t a lot of information that I kind find even each site that sells it kind of give different guidelines.

The rest of my plants seem to be doing well in the tank with a lot of growth.

Dosing APT1 daily right now based on the instructions. So 3ml as it’s about 28 gallon tank. Using tap water that measures 8dGH and 4-5dKH

I do have seiryu stone in there.

My GH is about at 12-14 in the tank. It does drop a little when I do a larger water change.

KH has stayed close to the same being at like 5-6 consistently.

Picture below. But the leaves are curling on themselves and the growth is seems pretty slow compared to the other plants. Though this could just be the normal growth rate. I get conflicting answers when search it online. Some say things say deficiency others say magnesium deficiency.

Was thinking about getting test kit for them but wanted to check because since the GH and Kh were higher figured I wouldn’t have a deficiency and wanted to make sure it wasn’t something else

Local water report reads at 38 mg/l for calcium and 11 Mg/l for magnesium.

apt1 has magnesium in it but I didn’t know if maybe it wasn’t enough to combat the leeching of the calcium. Cause I had red they should be at like a 4-1 to 3-1 ratio.

Again the other plants appear to be growing fine.

Be skeptical of any source that tells you that is "magnesium" or any other specific nutrient. That could be the issue, it could also be 100 other things. You have plenty of Mg in your tap fwiw

You dont necessarily have a problem either. Red Skeleton is almost certainly a variant of L ovalis, or a hybrid of L ovalis and something else, because it is identical in leaf shape and growth patterns. Ovalis in general all have wavy leaves

Biggest thing I see with yours is the color's not very good. Mine have some leaf curling too, that probably just comes with this variant

Idk which apt that is but theyre all pretty lean as far as macros. You could try adding more and see if the color improves and it might flatten the leaves out some. But if other plants look good I wouldnt worry about changing much for this particular plant

@Burr740 Ya I saw that you had it on your list of for sale so I’m glad you responded.

It’s a brand new tank think 3 1/3 weeks since I planted and it’s my first tank so I am still learning it all.

I was keeping the lighting and ferts lower to start cause I read that it can cause a lot of issues if you are getting too much of either while the tank is starting.

Been running my Chihiros Series B at like 70% for 7 hours a day.

The tank looks good to me and I am petrified of doing to much and then having like an algae bloom or something lol. I know it’s bound to happen but I’m not ready for it.

I’ll look at maybe dosing it a little more or upping the light.

I think your right to start out lean with the APT 1 for now since it appears you're substrate is aquasoil. However, if you,re at the 1 month point since planting, it's probably OK to start alternating with APT 3 a couple days a week and then gradually switching over more and more to the APT 3 until you're dosing that exclusively.

Ya that was my initial plan after a bit. Will look at ordering some and starting it sooner rather than later.

Thanks

Initial caution is good but unhappy plants is a FAR bigger threat than too much ferts (which really is no such thing honestly) I wouldnt be shy about adding more. At the very least use the full suggested dose. It should work well if you have fresh new aquasoil, thats what its designed to be used with

I agree with full dosage, but my main concern, based on my own limited experience with APT is that jumping to full dosing of APT 3 too early leads to big time algae, but that just may be my inexperience.
