Journal 62G AIO Dirty Soil Lagoon

This is my DIY Yugang using a rectangular locking Tupperware style container. It’s a better fit for my space as long as it holds water/pressure which I’ll know soon enough. It has a bulk head style RO inlet for the CO2 and two thru hull fittings with 5/8” hose line inlet and outlet for the pump.

Anxious to hear how this works out.

It's so awesome!

So sexy 😎😎

Post us a parts list!! 😁
I’ll be happy to as long as the design holds up 👍🏻 I didn’t have any of the parts I needed so total, I think it cost me $70. My goal was to make something that fit my space and customized for ME.

Okay, tank is filled and running great. @JayP the Carolina creek sand looks as advertised IMO now that it’s submerged. Has a light tan/whitish appearance now, which I think can vary depending on your light settings. I’m glad I went with it.

The bad news: my DIY Yugang failed miserably. The thru hull fittings leaked which I think I could have tightened up a bit, but the container itself flowed right past the silicone stopper where it latches. Oh well, I tried lol. I have a few weeks to get a replacement setup so I’m not worried, but I am annoyed.

Yeah, a lot of your cobble shifted to a more tan color also, so it worked out well.

Well that ain’t gonna fit

Anyone working with PVC, the “sewer and drain” pipe and fittings are usually cheaper. They are also not as thick as schedule 40 pipe and technically not meant for pressurized applications. For our purpose they work just the same. After failing with my Tupperware attempt, I’m now using 6” diameter PVC and I’ll utilize the thru hull fittings I got.

Hey @Dennis Wong, I’m 3 weeks into a dark start with APT Feast and I have noticed three tiny hair thin stalks sprout up from the substrate with little white bulbs/flowers/heads at the tips. Any idea what that could be? Hard to get a good picture of them where they are in the tank.

APT Feast, similar to most japanese aquasoils is made from raw soil, so there are incident seeds or even fungus that could be incorporated into the product. Some chinese soils are made from clay and other more processed raw materials, which give them a more uniform almost plasticy texture, but I found they didn't work so well in the tank environment. Aquasoil manufacture is a pretty rough process - imagine a mine in the country side, not a lab, so there will be variances in the product.

@Dennis Wong Not really concerned, look easy enough to pluck out. Was just curious what it could be. Do you also notice somewhat of an oily surface with this product initially? My water surface is constantly disturbed and overflow works just fine but I do notice a subtle sheen.

HMM, if it doesn't clear let me know? We haven't had much reports of that. I think unbinded clay could form an oily film for one thing, but I'm not sure if that is it or something else
