Welcome to ScapeCrunch

We are ScapeCrunch, the place where planted aquarium hobbyists come to build relationships and support each other. When you're tired of doom scrolling, you've found your home here.

Hello Welcome, Capraquaria

Thank you for the welcome! I am getting back into the hobby after 20 years. Started back in 1998 with a 75 gallon bowfront low tech planted tank, typical for aquariums then, just gravel, community fish, mostly loaded with Amazon swords, and some driftwood. That tank ran for 7 years until a move, and life and career got in the way for a while. I am excited to get back into this now I have a little more time (and resources).

Started back up again last year after realizing just how much the hobby has evolved over the past two decades. Picked up a couple of Takashi Amano's books, and have been binge watching ADA and IAPLC videos for design inspiration, along with Green Aqua, MJ Aquascaping, etc., and got motivated to start up again. Decided to start small with an ADA 60F, as it was easily shippable (a couple of reef, but no real scape stores here), and it fits on my bar counter. Added some Controsoil, a Chihiros WRGB II light, and grabbed the Chihiros CO2 generator kit before they were DC’d last year, and it’s running well. Carpet has grown in well, reds are popping, plants are pearling, but it’s way too small, so it will just be a fancy shrimp breeding tank for now.

Currently in the middle of redoing the basement floor in tile after a minor flood last summer, as it is water resistant, and have a UNS 150U tank and stand on order, which should be here in a few weeks.

About to install a 6 stage RO in the basement as we need one anyway with our well water being akin to liquid concrete, and I am not hauling water for a 150U tank. Have been stashing away hardscape, Amazonia, and equipment for this tank, and researching options for lights, CO2, controllers, dosers etc. and am getting down to technical details at this point and I find forums are more useful and interactive for the details.

I was diving into the Yugang CO2 reactors earlier today and that dropped me onto a thread here on ScapeCrunch, as I am considering the large stainless reactor from ARC. Also found Jeff Miotke’s video about that linked in one of the forms which was super helpful. After falling down a couple of rabbit holes, and reading through some of the threads, it seemed this would be a good community to join as I am likely to have some questions along the way, and there are some great people here.

I am a semi-retired veterinarian, an avid gardener, and was in the tech industry for several years before becoming a vet, so loving how modern tech has changed the hobby for the better, and am looking forward to building this tank. Unlike when I started my first tank almost thirty years ago, I am excited to have the plants and composition be the primary focus with the fish as supporting actors. Last time, it really was primarily all about the fish. However, this hobby can get pretty expensive, fast, so I want to try to make the best equipment and plant choices I can for this next build, and find it hugely helpful to learn from the experiences of others.
