My grandson has been letting me know I need a Betta fish in my tanks. He has been quite unrelenting…



I picked him up for the day today and on the way to the house I stopped at Petco and brought him in to pick out a Betta fish to keep in one of my tanks..



Petco has a variety of types of Bettas at sliding scale price… from low 4 ish dollars to $24.99.



Yep. The first fish he pointed to… $24.99…. I set it on a top shelf and told him to pick out a few more and then he could decide from a few…



Yep. It was the 24.99 one.. OK.. the price of engagement….



But then he went over a shelf and picked up the biggest Sponge Bob Pineapple house… because… “The fish needs to have a house Pepere!” I didnt even bother trying to argue with 6 year old logic. I winced at $53.00 final bill, but I am investing in that boy…. I have never been much a fan of Betta fish viewing the long flowy fins as interfering with functional swimming and a pain to care for and would have never made either purchase myself, but I was buying more than tacky decor and a Betta…



He was tickled and fully into it and went out in the kitchen frequently to see how his Betta was doing…. And wouldnt you know it. The fish was swimming in and out of the house and seemed to take to it as his own territory…



Thank goodness I have narrow spectrum RGB lighting to make that pineapple stand out more!

If it gets a kid interested in aquariums (or in his grandfather!), then the pineapple house is a worthy investment. Maybe you could attach moss to the pineapple

I hate moss in an aquarium probably even more than ceramic or resin decor…


I was this childs principal caretaker 12 hours a day 5 days a week from about 3 months old until5 years old when my wife was hospitalized for a month and had 6 months of recovery before I could start taking care of him 2 days a week again. Mommys work allowed her to work from home as I cared for my wife. I homeschooled him for his preschool year teaching him to identify upper and lower case letters and the sounds they make and learning his numbers.. mommy took over Kindergarten and just recently resigned her job in order to devote full time to teaching him.. I am still picking him up a day a week and we have always been close…

My goal was to build his engagement with the aquarium since he took an interest. He was interested and intrigued by putting the container in the aquarium to temp acclimate and to take out water from the container and add in water from the tank to acclimate to the water over time… and he had to feed him after a transfer was complete.

I am pretty sure he will run to the tank every visit to see “his” Betta…

I can tell you I was 7 years old when I got my first very own fish I picked him out myself, a betta and a little pepper cory buddy for him

We lived in apartments, and I loved that betta like a kid loves a puppy
