I was surprised and saddened to read that the UK's biggest aquatic trade show, AQUA, was canceled for 2023. Even sadder was the following quote from the article:

One million fewer aquariums

But the latest Pet Food UK’s Pet Population data reveals that in 2023 there are one million fewer aquariums and half a million fewer garden ponds in Britain than there were in 2022, and that will be taking a huge financial toll on the UK aquatic industry that is already struggling due to inflation and sky-high energy costs. So just when the UK industry really needed an aquatic show to boost sales and the number of people participating in the aquatic hobby, it looks like it just can’t afford one.

I wonder if this trend is worldwide? I know inflation is stinging most in the US as well.

Well, when things get tighter, necessities come before hobbies.

That said, I kinda think high-tech planted aquariums are more than just a casual hobby to those who have them and will hold out longer than the typical person with a beta bowl.

I agree. Those with a serious hobby may slow down purchases but I think they will do what's necessary to continue with their hobby. High tech planted tank folks should be considered "serious".

I have been a bit puzzled by the impact of high energy costs on the hobby in uk…

At least during the winter months the savings of stopping a tank are not nearly what one might think. The electricity going to the tank does double duty in heating the living space. Take it out of the equation and you have higher costs in the replacement of that heat…
