Looking good! You might able to hack saw a few inches off the bottom of that drift wood if you can get it out without making a colossal mess of everything. It won’t take much to improve the view of the back and won’t ruin any of the moss you have growing on it. Just a thought.

Your prob right I could prob do that. The only thing I don’t wana disturb is the anubias and fern that has so naturally wrapped itself around the base

We’ll see. Time is money in this house, so if I have a period of time where I can do such a task I will because I think it would improve everything visually. Plants are doing great I just can’t see em 😂

Tank is doing surprisingly well despite not getting water changes every 2 weeks. Now, full disclosure, it doesn’t look like this after 2 weeks lol not even close 😂 I’ve been getting some really tough green algae on the glass and some manages to make it onto some plants leaves. Luckily it rubs right off the leaves but I don’t want it to begin with. I know if stuck to a weekly routine I’d be set because the plants are doing well, but life just isn’t cooperating so, is what it is. I’m getting better and staggering plant height with the stems to get the contrast. For a little while it was quite dull as I had no deep reds to contrast against the heavy pinks, but the addition of Ludwigia diamond helped with that. However comparing to Rubin, I do like Rubin better overall but it’s nice to try different types. The skinny pink crypt is my albida costata, I’ve grown it in the past on lower light but with high light it’s putting out these beautiful pink leaves with a like green stripe down the middle, really cool. The flamingo TC is also throwing out new leaves and I have relocated the cup to the middle of the Java fern bush and I’m curious as to how it goes from there. I’ve had a slow start with my pogo Kimberly but I don’t think it was happy where I previously had it so now it’s to the left with the parawitota.

Well @GreggZ , I haven’t learned my lesson yet. I’m about to get more Praecox on Aquabid 🫠 this will be my last attempt to get some hardy ones, I still have one that’s at least 2 years old. I can’t help but enjoy that blue flash, not to mention they are a nice size for my tank.
LOL good luck! When it comes to Praecox, most times you don't buy them.........you rent them! It's been the same for decades. There are some other smaller breeds you might consider. Melanotaenia sp. Kali Tawa is a real looker, and Melanotaenia Mairasi are very nice too.

View attachment 5243Got some robust and healthy looking fish. I’m a little bummed that it appears out of 10 fish I got 1 male, but they all look great. I’ll give em a week in this quarantine tank and if all looks good they can join everyone else
Was gonna say some don’t look so hot then I realized it was the reflection from the tank bottom making them look upside down.

They look very healthy!!

A shame about the sex ratio. Just how different are the males and females in this species? Are they feasible to breed to ultimately get more males? Or is that a bad idea because of the weak stock that's available?

The males are typically more blue with red fins. The females are usually less robust with yellow fins and a silverish/blue. Still a pretty fish when colored up, just not as vibrant. Can’t speak to the breeding aspect, although with my one male I already had it’ll be 2 males to 9 females so plenty of opportunity 😂. My only experience with them has been through purchases from AquaHuna and the mortality rate I’ve experienced has been pretty much 90% within weeks to months. This time around I tried a breeder on Aquabid.

This time around I tried a breeder on Aquabid.

I've successfully hatched and raised blue-eyes from spawning mops off Aquabid, back in the glacial past.. Dead easy, the fry are good sized and take brine shrimp nauplii right away.

Can you do that with the big rainbowfish?

It's ridiculously satisfying 😂 watching those little eyespots grow up into fish!

Live food is a pain in the ass, but you only need it for the first couple weeks, if that.

Yes I can’t agree more! I tried with my peacock gudgeons and it was relatively easy. Threw a piece of pvc pipe in there and they spawned a few times. I reached the wiggler stage but I think they ended up getting eaten. And yeah live food is another hobby within itself.
