Recently, I’ve made it a practice to spend part of the last week of the year planning for the next one. I find that it gives me something to strive for and allows me to feel like I’m achieving some of my life’s objectives intentionally.

This year, I’m extending this to my aquarium.

I like to come up with a theme that I will focus on so my aquarium theme for this year is going to be “simplicity”. Simplicity in gear, husbandry and fauna.

My tank is tech heavy today. I like to say that it is to help me manage my tank while I’m away (I travel a fair bit) but on the down-low, I’m also a tech gadget guy at heart. While some of this technology and gadgetry will need to stay, my plan is to think about what I can take away.

So that’s my plan for 2025 and I’ll update my Journal to keep me honest and intentional.

What plans do you have for 2025??

I guess my theme is just Improvement, lol! I’m working on setting up the last aquarium to fit in my space, and then it’ll just be a matter of gradual improvement and learning. I plan to post a kind of tank inventory next week, so I can look back and compare next year.

I am planning for simplicity (like Art), improvement (like Kwyet) and also ease, as in how can I make maintenance easier and more efficient, without the complications of added gadgetry.

To that effect, I am semi-automating the syphoning systems on my 4 tanks, as well as for adding back water, and am planning to make bulk solutions for all my dry additives and to put them into squeeze measuring bottles for easy dosing.
I am also setting up my generator and power cords in a way so as to make it simpler to connect everything (tanks, koi pond and hydroponics) when a power outage occurs.

I’m sure some other schemes will come to mind as the new year progresses!

The end of the year is usually my time to fiddle with the tank. In the last few weeks, I tidied up the electrical equipment (i.e. mounting and wiring) in the cabinet. And measure the power draw for my tank... 286W with almost everything accounted for. Only 2 items not included: a Gyre pump and a pH/temperature monitor.

The current plan is to get a fleece roller filter for my sump. In fact, was just about to post a thread to ask about that.

I’ve been accumulating equipment and supplies the last couple of months in prep for a return to fish, and plant, keeping. A stand/cabinet is about the last thing I need. Should be getting started in a month or two. Lots of dumb questions forthcoming 😉 @Art I also have a hard time resisting gadgetry; this little tank of mine is going to be way over-engineered 😂

I hope to get my big tank stocked, so it's going to be a big year for fish!

Now that my youngest child is out of the baby stage I hope to participate more in my local club this year. They have a Horticulture Awards Program that I have decided to participate in for a little fun. I'm definitely at a disadvantage not running CO2, but nothing new there, lol. I probably won't add many new plants, but work on perfecting the ones I have.

I'm also thinking about what my next project will be. Right now I have a nano tank that has some shrimp and my original 20 long that I have no real plan for, and an empty 22 long. What to do? A breeding project? CO2 spray bar experiment? Some kind of fiddly specialty fish?

Fishroom 4.0 + Tank(s) Journal, the stars are aligning 😅

Leak testing the resealed 50 gal vintage Metaframe-adjacent today.. realized I made a couple silicone mistakes so may have to repeat again. Third time lucky! 🤞

Upgrading to a 75 gallon tank in the bedroom. Converting the 2, 29 gallon tanks to farm tanks holding tanks.

I might plumb in an inch and a quarter drain that auto siphons out the tank for faster waterchanges than the python…. And I might install holding tanks in the basement and pump the water up into the tank with just flipping a switch….

My plans are simple : I need to work on patience: letting plants and tanks find their happy spot, and being happy with slow growing plants and leaner fert/CO2 dosing.

Happy New Year!

Another wabi kusa, maybe a terrarium/paludarium. My big stock pond didn't do so well with medaka this year so I need to figure out a better strategy.

I may jump back into more nature style aquariums, I've been keeping only Dutch for such a long time and I'm starting to feel burnt out on the maintenance of only one tank.

My plan for the year is to finish tweaking my 40g, add one more group of fish to my 100g, then sit back and just enjoy the tanks. Without fiddling with them. Maybe. Oh, and continue to try and get my dwarf Corydoras to breed and to successfully grow the fry. But mostly I just want to sit in front of the tanks and watch in wonder.

To grow healthier plants and to up my game in general. Nothing special. To be more thorough in what I do, especially when replanting and vacuuming mulm from soil. To grow better the plants i have.
I’ve only recently tried this tool, but can’t say enough about using a turkey baster to stir up hidden or unsuspecting detritus. If your not already, make sure to get one or use it during your vacuuming, it WILL make a difference and you’ll be disgusted with what surfaces!

This is best method. I have made it a priority to do this in my non-co2 cube.

Yes, I'm using it but since my tank is 92 gal I mostly don't clean whole bottom that way.
