Posting from @Queen Arabesque:

Thank you so much Art! I have been reading your site for the past hour and am thoroughly enjoying it. Let's see, a little about myself...

I have been a hobbyist for decades. I've worked two jobs to afford my hobby. One of those always included helping out at friends aquatic stores. I'll do anything to be able to pick out my own corals, plants, and critters out of wholesalers for wholesale prices :0) Seems like I've always had a fishroom with this hobbies loves, I just had to have.

I bred Discus for awhile out of my garage many moons ago. I was the person people would call when their tank broke down after all the stores were closed for PVC parts, pipe, or whatever else we could rig to fix the problem til daybreak. I kept so much crap back in the day. But if a system failure occured at 2 o'clock in the morning, people would call me. I probably had what they needed.

Recently I made the decision to give up all my tanks for one large one. It's being an 8 foot pain in my butt right now. I have never had BBA and now my fully planted tank has it :0/ I have lots of thoughts on what's causing it, but it being so large, well, I'm stuck. I think my ADA substrate has finally screamed, I'm melting! Like the witch in the Wizard of Oz. I can't tell you how much that cost me. But I hear, it's untouchable now, in price. That and to tell you the truth, I haven't seen it anywhere in a long time.

So now you know a little bit about me and my new dilemma. I'll appreciate anyone's feedback on a reasonably priced substrate or stratum. Or just tell me about the ones you like and why you like them.

It was very nice meeting you all,

Thanks for sharing your situation. First, congrats! An 8 foot tank is only a dream for me but I’m very jealous of all the space you must have for plants to really grow fully!

Second, BBA is probably my biggest foe and we’ve talked about it in a thread trying to figure out how to get rid of BBA for good. I’m sorry you are struggling with it. My ultimate solution was to replace the substrate and start again.

Sadly, ADA products remain very hard to get and as expensive as ever. I’m sure import tariffs will only make this worse. My suggestion would be to go with an inert substrate like BDBS . It’s much more reasonable for your set up, in my opinion.

You may want to set up a Journal thread. Look at the link in my signature entitled FAQ and it will link you to how to do it.

Welcome again!

Hi, Everyone, I just spent the last hour reading part of your forum. Im really enjoying it. I have been a hobbyist for over 40 years. I've had both freshwater and salt water aquariums. I've bred Discus and a few other fish out of my garage. I worked 2 jobs to pay for my hobby. And always, one would include working at aquatic stores my friends owned for the perks, like getting to go to places like Seagrest

I really appreciate the kind words and advice. Don't feel jealous. It's nice having a larger tank but the problem with a larger tank, is larger problems. I never thought about about that before condensing all my tanks into one. It is beautiful, but can be costly. I have a hard plastic kiddy pool in my garage that I used only for my tank. I hate the thought of tearing my tank apart with all these plants and wood and large rocks. I have a huge, beautiful stump with lots of ins and outs in there that took months to sink and it's pretty heavy. I keep a lot of wood in there for my Queen Arabesque and White Tiger plecos. They like to eat wood. And I mean literally. I will plug on because I know I'll love the outcome. Hey, we all have something that pulls at our hearts and mine has always been aquatica.
Have an Incredible Weekend,
L260
