Welcome to ScapeCrunch

We are ScapeCrunch, the place where planted aquarium hobbyists come to build relationships and support each other. When you're tired of doom scrolling, you've found your home here.

Hello Welcome, Peter

Hi Art and everyone,
Thanks for having me here.

I've been in and out of the hobby since I was 8 years old, when I got an aquarium as a Christmas present (which I think my parents regretted, not expecting it to turn into a full-fledged hobby). I've almost always had at least 1 aquarium ticking away but my level of involvement has gone up and down considerably, depending on what else I've had going on in my life. I currently have 5 embarrassingly neglected tanks and I'm looking to turn up the dial a bit again.

I've already been looking through the thread on DIY micros and have learnt so much thanks to Burr740 and GreggZ (I will definitely be getting into this at some point). It reminded me why forums are so much better than social media, because this information can easily be searched and revisited years after posting.

Thanks again,
Peter

Great to have you here, @Peter. Whereabouts in NZ are you? I know Australia is a different country, but it's close. @Joel Armstrong is an Aussie and I think it's the same time zone (or close to it).

How is the planted aquarium hobby in that part of the world?

Hey @Art and @Joel Armstrong

Yes Australia is close. It's about the only country that is. They got all the animals that want to kill you and we got none, luckily. Yes, apart from some islands, we can lay claim to being the first country to see the sun each day.
But if you want to travel anywhere else, you better be prepared for a long flight. :p
I live in a little town called Shannon which is a little north of Wellington (bottom of the North Island)

We are well behind the rest of the world when it comes to aquascaping. Some of that is just standard due to our remoteness and small population but a lot is due to the strict biosecurity that we have to protect our environment. For example, no shrimp, and no bucephalandra.
We only recently had a company who put in the effort required to get aquasoil and tissue culture plants imported. So we do have those now, but a very limited selection.
A lot of plants are still very hard to get. Sometimes you feel the need to have spare aquariums just for keeping your collection of rare plants alive (this may be frowned upon by significant others...)
Well, that's my rant for the morning...

Thanks for the welcome. I'm stoked to be here.
