I used to be an enthusiastic aquarist who was quite active on various aquarium forums. However, due to my conflicted nature, I eventually got blacklisted almost everywhere I was involved (barrreport.com, plantedtank.net, ukaps.org). Seven years ago I quit the aquarium hobby. Now I am "cautiously" returning to it again. My main interest is to get to the bottom of things, to discover the deeper nature of things, the principles and laws hidden behind external phenomena. In practice, this manifests itself in the way that I try to carry out various experiments to find out what conditions are crucial for the successful cultivation of aquarium plants. I try to share the results of some of my experiments along with my insights on my personal website golias.net. It's slow going, though, because there are a lot of factors that play a role. And because I'm trying to do these experiments in a methodically sound way, it is also quite time and money consuming.
I was alerted to this forum by @PeerUnk when I was looking for a way to add CO2 to my nano test tanks in some simple, inexpensive, yet reliable way. @Yugang helped me a lot with his innovative idea for a "CO2 Spray Bar".
Wow, welcome to ScapeCrunch. We're glad you're here and thank you for the passion that you obviously have for our hobby.
I love seeing this type of analysis and testing. Successful or not, controversial or not, it pushes innovation and thinking in any hobby so there mere act of doing it and sharing information is vitally important. I did something like this (certainly not as scientific) in the past when I was experimenting with:
using carbon to limit or avoid water changes
seeing if increasing bacterial population via dosed carbon source would negatively impact algae
using small foam fractionation as a means to increase oxygen in the aquarium
whether sumps materially impacted the CO2 levels of the aquarium
whether carbon increased PAR in an aquarium
whether a PowerSand clone made any material difference in an aquarium
Never published much of the results and some I didn't even finish. One got me pretty toasted on FaceBook.
Anyway, looking forward to discussing findings and thoughts with you. Thanks for joining us.
