Hi everybody -

I am so happy to welcome Harry Hans (@RareAquaticPlants) to our family. He is an expert with rare aquatic plants and, in particular, Bucephalandra.

Harry has been aquascaping and growing Bucephalandra since 2006. His grandparents lived in Borneo, which is where his father was born. He has always been into botany since he was a kid and became more interested in aquatic plants 20 years ago, particularly with Bucephalandra, and other plants from Borneo, and mosses, fissidens and aquatic ferns.

He will NO DOUBT add to the collective knowledge of our growing family. I am so looking forward to understand Buces more and seeing some eye candy from around this great world of ours.

Harry, THANK YOU so much for joining us. Looking forward to chatting and learning.

Thanks so much! I’m excited to be a part of this community! I’ll be happy to help out as much as I can, and I’m sure I’ll learn from all of you as well!
Kia’ora and Aloha!

@RareAquaticPlants could you describe the environment bucephalandra grows in Borneo? Type of soil, water chemistry, presence of nutrients, temperature range, etc. Thanks.
That’s a great question, and a little outside my knowledge unfortunately I don’t have a lot of information about the natural water chemistry of Borneo’s montane streams.
Bucephalandra grows mainly in dense forests in Borneo and Indonesia, around rocky streams. It spends most of its life emersed, and only becomes submerged a few times a year during rainy seasons.
Being an epiphytic plant, it grows mostly on rocks and not in soil. I’m not sure exactly what the temperatures are but we know that they prefer colder temps around 72-75 degrees.
