Testing GH

Hi,

What tests are most recommended for testing GH?

Is it best to test for calcium and magnesium individually?

Are the API GH test kits ok? Reliable?
Or some other brands recommended maybe?

Thank you 😊
Hey Joel the API dGH tests are fine. I can't say the same for all their test kits but the dGH seems to work quite well.

As to testing for Ca/Mg depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go. If you want to know for sure then get a Ca test kit. If you know Ca you can calculate Mg.

If you want to wing it you can do that too. Usually tap water dGH comes mostly from Ca. But that is a general not a hard rule.

So let's say you have very low tap dGH. Then I'd add a little Ca and more Mg to hopefully get to a good ratio. If tap water is higher dGH then it likely has plenty of Ca so I'd just add Mg to bring that number up

Also keep in mind that all that being said if you are on municipal water your local supplier should be able to tell you what those numbers are.

And if you start with RO water then no testing is needed. You just dose to whatever target you want.
