Again, the only experience I have is with Koiphen, of which I am an administrator.
Koiphen was started by an individual with a passion for koi. As the years (decades!) went by it grew massively and a tangent entity was created, the World Wide Koi Club (WWKC), with many of it’s own perks and functions, one of which was to own and run the forum, Koiphen. The owner sold Koiphen to the WWKC for $1.
Another decade or so later saw the forum and the hobby in general declining, and 2 years or so ago the WWKC has been disbanded. Koiphen is still operating with a hired IT guy, a bank account with some funds and it’s administration. One long time admin handles the money and expenses.
Recently we were threatened with a lawsuit by a koi dealer who wanted some 15 year old posts removed because they contained some derogatory remarks about his business practices. At first we thought, no, we will not remove every negative review just because the recipient of the remarks doesn’t like it, but when he threatened to bring lawyers in, our IT expert told us that as admins, we would be considered the owners (for lack of any one else at this point) and we would be liable for costs incurred and damages to be paid. Needless to say, we removed the posts that he specified. None of us realized that we would be so personally involved.
We actually are not sure now, what to do about the forum. It has many, many years worth of valuable information, some very dedicated administrators and no “official” ownership. No one wants to see the forum close down but it is running smoothly now and we are not addressing the situation. Reading about the ScapeCrunch issues and how to set things up for the future is inspiring me to bring the subject up over on Koiphen. It is very important and I applaud
@Art for thinking these matters through in advance!
