I have built my own sump-driven aquarium systems in the past and used the Bean Animal overflow to make sure it was silent and fail-safe. Works as described and I was very happy with it.
It isn't common in the planted aquarium hobby to DIY sumps as the canister filter is sufficient. However, if you ever decide to give sumps a try and your tank isn't reef-ready, this is a great option for you.
