Hello, my red root floaters used to have amazing long red roots but over the last few months the roots have turned short and green. What am I doing wrong?
45l tank
Neo soil
Chihiros A2 light at 60% for 10 hours
HOB filter
Neo cherry shrimps

For me they do best with heavy macros, that includes root color

High/low NO3 can alter leaf color but it doesnt much affect the color of the roots - ime

Poor root growth is often related to low PO4, applies to most plants. Not saying thats the problem just something to check

Idk specifically what turns the roots color. When mine get long and thick they're usually a good red. If the roots are growing short and sparse they're usually green or light pink, such as young plants or if theyre lacking something

When in doubt raise macros is what I always say

I’m pretty new to them as well so I don’t have a lot of feedback yet, but I do have them in 3 tanks with different light/co2/dosing levels. I’m taking notes on what growth correlates with changes in parameters.

Tanks are:
- Display tank running high light, moderate Co2, and lean EI ferts with Thrive+
- Farm tank with plants only running high light, co2, and full EI mixed from dry salts in solution.
- A random storage tub outside my front door with a HOB filled with rainwater. No ferts, no nothing.

I’ll probably start a thread if anything notable starts to develop.

Id be interested to see what the differences are, or arent

I’ve honestly noticed that my tanks that are low tech with active substrate, and a low to medium light work fantastic for them. They grew deep red in color and flowered a lot.
