Does anyone have any leads on where to get longer intakes for deep tanks? I have a tall hexagon tank. The back substrate edge is about 18 inches from the surface of the water and the current one is too short. Need skimmer function too. Is there a DIY plan somewhere or maybe a longer version to buy?

Thanks

Older model SunSun intakes with the skimmer would be the ticket. Jet black pipe, 3/4" ID, comes in sections you can make it as long as you need. The skimmer works like a charm too, can easily turn it off or on by sliding the main pipe all the way up

However, they deleted the skimmer a few years ago. Shame too because the skimmer is the number one draw. I run these on all the big tanks. Luckily Ive gone through so many of these filters I have plenty of spare parts, except for the little skimmer part itself. There is also a good kind and a bad kind. Earlier versions used a different design for the skimmer piece, and that one sucks. Its not even worth having. This next pic is the kind you do not want. Has to be like the first pic

There used to be a huge online place that sold used aquarium parts. No matter what kind of equipment it was, if you needed a part for it they had it. Its been a few years since I looked but last time I did they only had the sucky version, which looks like this

Pretty sure I have enough spares to send you all the pipes youd need. Will have to go look to be sure. . But I know I dont have the little skimmer part itself. Might be possible to diy one, Ive never explored doing that

Anyway lmk if you want the other pieces, be glad to send them your way

Oase makes freestanding skimmers independent of your filter.

I prefer a skimmer feeding into a filter, but this does have its place at times.

I bought this one and do not recommend it. It simply didn't skim.
That’s odd. I’m using that one, and it skims quite well. I’m using it with the guard, so maybe that makes a difference? I did have an Oto get trapped in it one night though, so I stopped running it at night and haven’t had any more problems.

I used the Eheim skim 350 for decades and they work well. the only issue I had was the horizontal current(lowest setting) in a shallow tank at 3" below the surface that would bend stem plants over, otherwise they are rock solid. Tall tanks not an issue.
I was drawn to the Oase skim due to the water output flowing vertically instead of horizontally, I've used these for about three weeks now. The Oase skim float has sucked down and stop skimming, a small tap will free it though. The smallest of plant debris will cause it to suck air and create more noise. In fairness, I use the clear shrimp guard(not shown in pic). So far I'm not impressed.....
