Details?

Well, I had an algae farm for over 8 months fighting a losing battle following advise given on youtube…. Very frustrated at never getting it under control….

And there was this guy on a forum who kept commenting on accepted wisdom of plant keeping that what was being spouted was nonsense…. He had an Avatar of a braying donkey….

I sort of thought he was full of it, but looking at pictures of his tanks….. they looked like tanks I wanted to have…. And then I looked at tanks of the folks on youtube who were held up as experts. Their tanks didnt look any better than mine….

I PMd this guy and asked if his tanks were for real…. I was actually starting to doubt that anybody could have a tank largely free of algae…. He assured me they were for real…. He turned me on to the 2 Hr Aquarist and the blogs about Algae…. I had run across them before, but wasnt sure they could be trusted and relied on…. They said different things then the reputed Youtube experts…. I figured I had nothing to lose as 8 months of efforts following the “experts “ advice hadnt gotten me to the dance I wanted to be at…. I dove in to @Dennis Wong Blogs and read, reread, studied, took notes….and then I mDe a whole bunch of changes all at once and not “make one change at a time”….. And by golly, I started having success. I started having healthy plants growing that defended themselves against Algae…

I held my breath for months certain that the bottom would fall out and I would wake up with algae infestations again, but with time I started gaining confidence…

So then I started turning my attention to getting some structure to my tanks and improving Aesthetics…. I was attracted to Dutch Style more than nature or diorama. Before I bit the bullet to go with a 75 gallon I decided to use my two 29 gallon tanks to use as a sandbox and painters pallette to see If I could learn some of the concepts and techniques of Dutch scaping….

I culled my species count down to 7 plants with 2 veils.. a 29 in my estimation is an awfully awkward size for Dutch scaping due to it being 2 1/2 feet, and being only 11 1/2 inches front to back…I placed masking tape to divide the tank in thirds side to side and bottom to top, chose red plants to place in the intersections, put in a cardinal Lobelia street , planted veils, and foreground and then pondered background plants . I went through a few iterations with plant substitutions…

I still need to make ugly moss walls which I hate personally. It all needs manicuring and opening up a bit between groupings., and the foreground plants need trimming and manicuring and then show some new growth…

I need a better light to look better, currently running 2 Finnex Planted Plus ALCs one in front, one in back…. The Limnophelia Aquatica needs to grow in a bit more and the Moneywort Veil needs to gain sone height and be trained more toward the wall….

But, It is close enough I can see the end product in my mind….

Livestock is a hodgepodge assortment of torn down tanks…. It may well be curated better to better conform in time…

Still very much a work in progress.

I never drink Miller beer, but I do owe @Unexpected a debt of gratitude for mentoring me to this point…

I also have a debt of gratitude to so many on this forum freely sharing their expertise and knowledge in their posts on the forum. I have learned a lot studying and reading @Burr740 posts and journals, @GreggZ @Dennis Wong , @Jeff Miotke ,@Koan and many, many others…

Aren't you running PPS Pro 😆.
Yes , well sort of…

I make my mixes per pps pro, but I do weekly deep water changes and after doing them I front load macros to get levels back up to where they were before doing the water changes. I then dose PPS pro daily at the high light co2 enriched dosing.

In essence I like dosing the tank daily and pretty much, it is replenishing what was consumed the prior day…. In practice though, on a weekly basis I am dumping in pretty close as much as I would be under EI dosing..

I love that it is a UGF tank.
UGF and a Fluval 207 with a spray bar across the back and a glass lily intake with surface skimmer.

The UGF provides excellent back up biofiltration in event of an extended power outage. I can maintain the biofilter ugf with 2 watts of power. 48 watt hours per day. The UGF also washes WC ferts over high CEC fired clay and aquasoil under BDBS cap.

How are you running micros. If my memory serves me correctly, you use CSMB with some added elements?

GLA Micros - Micromix: DTPA & EDTA Chelated Micronutrient Blend

Dosed daily to a proxy of 0.45 of Iron per week. I add in tiny tiny, tiny amount of Nickel Sulfate Hexahydrate, a bit more Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate, and Ascorbic acid..

I just mixed up a batch today. I mix it up 1,500ml double strength and store in the fridge in a half gallon mason jar. As needed I mix up 500 ml of so,ution with another 500 mls distilled water in my dosing bottles.

In 1500 mls of double strength mix, I add 53 milligrams of the nickel compound to give an indication how tiny the amount is. I bought a little over a pound of the nickel compound and I am all set for several lifetimes…

Can you do a break down of your plant list
Far left background, Limnophilia Aquatica,
Next over Pantanal,
Cardinal lobelia Street,,
Far right rear Stargrass
Left front veil plant, moneywort,
Left foreground Ranunculus,
Front of cardinal street,
Right foreground S. repens
Right Midground Samolous Parviflora
Right Veil Vallisneria.

Thanks, very pretty. I have a 29 gallon tank and I think the use of the height and the masking of the lack of depth is great! I love the stargrass and the contrast with the L.Pantanal.

How many trims do you need before the stargrass looked like this ?

Also curious how you decided on these plants than the typical rotalas and Ludwigeas for background

Recently pulled out all my Val given the number of runners it was sending, assuming you just pull them out.

Are you using Apt feast ?

It needs to be trimmed down inches every week. It probably took 6 weeks from when I first planted some before it grew large enough, but shaping it is largely a matter of hacking it down to size and then trimming back to form the shape wanted and then giving it a few days to grow out and mask the cut edges.

“lack of depth”

The 11 1/2 inch front to back footprint of a 29 is a significant challenge to overcome. I dont think a 29 is a great choice for Dutch style Aquascape, but it is what I had on hand and wanted to convince myself I could pull it off before spending money on a 75 gallon tank.

I had Pantanal in another tank that wasnt working there. I moved ito er to try it and it works.

Aquatica was given to me from someone that needed a home to go in…. I used to have Amania Gracilis in that spot and its just too bif a plant for a 29. I transferred it into my 75 gallon.

I had a different plant in the spot where the stargrass is and wasnt happy with it,..

Here is a prior iteration of this same tank layout with different plants.

I think it works much better now.

Yes. Weekly. And I pull big clumps outnear the glass maybe monthly to keep it on the sparse side. It wants to take over the tank just like the stargrass..

No. I am mixing Macros up the same way PPS Pro calls for and dose daily. The difference though is that I front load macros after weekly water change to bring levels back up to where they were before water change. I also dose micros daily with a Green leaf aquariums micro mix that I add more zinc to and a tiny amount of nickel.

I have mesh bags that has a mix of Safe T Sorb and BDBS from an older aquascape about 3/4 of an inch thick laying on top of undergravel filter plates with 2 inches of bdbs on top to plant into. The thought is that the WC ferts gets continually washed over the high CEC Safe T Sorb and charges up the clay and the plants can feed off of it. I think you would be hard pressed to come up with cheaper substrate. The mesh bags easily allow rooting into, and it keeps the Safe T Sorb in the bag when uprooting stems so it doesnt litter on top of the BDBS.

It does appear that the case to shift away from CSM+B grows day by day....

Are there any resources for learning in depth about Dutch aquascaping in regards to layout and maintenance ?
There are a number of scattered articles. Nothing I can put my hands on right at the moment.

I bet if you created a post asking for them on the board you would get a lot of responses…
