I want to buy a dozen marbeled hatchetfish for my 75 gallon, and everywhere I look they are sold out.

I know a large proportion are wild caught, I would guess after the rainy season with its explosion of breeding.

So is there a season they are more likely on the market?

Maybe ask your LFS or online retailer to get some info?
Only physical fish store within an hr of me is a run down Petco. I have given up asking them anything…

Online I have asked never say much of anything…

Aqua Imports has marbled in stock 👍

For other hatchetfish species, have you put yourself on the mailing list(s) for "alert me when back in stock" at The Wet spot? I suspect some of their purchasing is based on how many people sign up for different specific species.

I have personally had straight up awful experiences with AZ Gardens and would never buy plants or animals from them again.

I guess there might be, as in wet and dry season. Like a lot of fish they might be easier to catch toward the end of the dry season, less water volume, easier to find, harder to escape.

Anyway, love hatchet fish, but I've nearly always used open topped tanks. The two are not compatible. Even when I've kept them in tanks with a lid they somehow managed to escape.

I just messaged with one of my SA suppliers. He said they are seasonal, and hard to get anyway because of the local they are collected from. He did say they will probably getting some in a few weeks. I trust their thoughts as they've been around for almost 70yrs lol!

I was considering hatchetfish for my tank. While I was looking at vendors I did seem to notice they were seasonal. I reached out to both Dan's and Wet Spot to inquire about availability. Dan's told me they regularly stock hatchets, while Wet Spot said they are seasonal and usually available in the spring and fall. Take it for what it's worth.

Wet Spot just got some in 👍
