Hi all,

I am thinking of adding one of these to my canister filter. Does anyone have any feed back, Good or bad. They are not much money, I was looking at the Fluval brand pretty inexpensive.

I am hoping it would help with keeping algae at bay.

Thank you,

Andy

I think it’s a nice tool to have, but in terms of being a preventative for the bulk of the algae we deal with, it’s unlikely to have much of an impact. Good husbandry and maintenance will do you much better, granted it requires more time and effort.

Yes thanks for the feedback, I am looking for any tool that might help aid my maintenance tasks.
Thanks

It won’t hurt, just hard to say if it’s actually working or your just doing a good job with maintaince. I will say though that it’s not a substitute for a missed water change or cleaning. Those issues will arise regardless if the UV is running.

Hi and welcome.

I think most aquarists will accumulate a UV sterilizer at some point. I say accumulate because it will likely go into your stash of aquarium equipment that is rarely used.

IMO, it is best to keep as few points of failure as possible to run your aquarium. The UV sterilizer is a point of failure that you don't need all the time in your aquarium. It is a good tool for green water or when cyanobacteria arrives. Otherwise, I have never found it to be particularly useful.

Spend time learning how to properly clean and trim your aquarium. Think about how to make weekly water changes as painless and quick as possible. Make your goal focused on stability of the environment.

Good luck!
