So the first picture is an actual planted tank in Seattle, if I remember correctly. It was done by Kenji Aquarium Design + Build for Amazon's headquarters. Auto water changes, computer controlled, the works!
 
I mean, you got me beat by a little bit. No Apex or fancy sump here.

Its big 30" x 30" x 24". I need a ladder to do anything inside the tank.

OK so love that! I see a Herbie overflow with a gyre pump underneath it? Great size tank for stems, by the way!
 
They gyre is new and not tested yet. Bought it to help bring up stuff up off the bottom.
The overflow works but not like I think it should / want. Just doesn't get down to the depths at the bottom. This deterous etc settle . Thought about drilling the tank but man that's a huge step.
 
The gyre should do a pretty good job of bringing detritus up to the skimmer. Try it before drilling, for sure.
