I'm planning on getting a Fleece Roller Filter for my sump. Specifically the ClariSea SK 5000 Gen 3. I choose this mainly because of size fit with my current sump. Fortunately, the reviews have been pretty decent too.

I know few people run sumps with planted tanks, and even fewer run Fleece Roller filters. I searched ScapeCrunch and so far only @Koan has mentioned he runs one.

I'm doing my research, but a lot of it comes from the marine side of the hobby.

Just want to ask how's it going for people (if any) who are using or have used these rollers. Yay or nay?

What are the pros and cons? The main pro is time saved from NOT having to clean mechanical filtration like filter pads or socks weekly or so.

No feedback to give yet, that tank has been on pause.

This will be my first time running a tank with a sump. The intent for using a roller mat as a pre-filter is to consistently maintain cleanliness in the sump, in the same way that the easy access prefilter on the Biomaster series canisters does. Any success for me depends on the strictly limiting the frequency of deep cleaning maintenance needed on that sump tank.

In my past experience, if there is an area for bio-gunk to collect and back up anywhere in a tank system, I will surely fail to find and clean it 🙄 🙄 leading to phenomenal successes farming cyanobacteria and other miseries 🤦

I went with the Bubble Magus Gen2 filter because of its reputation for ease of fleece roll change and consistent performance. We'll see.

No fleece roller, but I also run a sump. It currently just houses two 3” Poret foam “baffles” that act as my mechanical filtration, one is 10PPI and the other is 20PPI. It does a pretty good job of catching debris, anything beyond that is just mulm that develops from bacteria. I’ll siphon that out every other month or so. I have considered getting a mesh bag to fit over one of the overflow pipes to catch the bigger debris but sometimes fish take a ride down the tube once in a while and I don’t want them to get caught up or stuck.
