I’m mostly a lurker here but have decided to start a journal of this tank so I can keep up with its changes. It has been set up since May 2023. Seems like most of you are high tech/ Dutchies so it’s a bit intimidating but here goes …IMG_1905.jpeg

100 gallon Planet Aquarium tank and cabinet
Oase Biomaster 600 and 250
Finnex HLC lights
Pool filter sand
Inkbird controller
That’s about it.

Pearl gouramis, Rasboras, Corydoras, Otocinclus, RCS, a few ramshorn snails here and there.

I started off using PPS Pro with GLA ferts but am now trying front loading macros (thanks @GreggZ ) and Burr Micros (thanks @Burr740). 20% weekly water changes. Some of the plants have recently been moved here from other tanks so still have some growing to do. They have been sourced from all over - from our lowly local PetSmart to the pinnacle of @Burr740.

Using RO since our tap has a TDS over 800 and tastes like … yuk. Can’t imagine the fish and plants would be happy with it.

Totally open to any and all feedback or suggestions!

That looks very good! I’d be proud of that. Don’t mind us Dutchies, we all just like to make things more difficult than they need to be LOL

Edit - no idea why autocorrect turned “we all” into jewel. I’m not THAT bad of a typer….

Sweet tank! I like the jungle look a lot, and echoing the others don’t feel out of place 👍🏻 I prefer nature aquarium style myself and using regular soil as my substrate. We all got our backgrounds and stories, you do what works for you and makes you happy. It’d be real boring around here if everyone was the same!

Like others above have said that is a great looking tank. Has a really nice vibe to it.

And likely a lot less trimming/pruning/maintenance than high light stem tank.

Keep up the good work!

Only thing missing are some Rainbowfish!! ;)

Thanks, everyone! I just realized I probably should have posted this in the low tech forum. Please feel free to move it there if it’s more appropriate.

This IS a tank I could sit and watch for hours. And see something different. And something that needs to be tweaked. 😜

Nah your in the right spot 👍🏻 which pool filter sand did you go with? It’s very clean you do an excellent job of keeping it that way clearly.

I love the gourami’s such gorgeous underrated fish.

If you didn’t adjust the picture the Finnex is lighting up your tank in a very attractive hue, I haven’t used the finnex models since early 2010’s but it’s growing your plants quite well in a deep tank. Impressive.

I used the HTH pool filter sand from Ace Hardware. I don't really vacuum it at all but I have 17 Corydoras aeneus that are constantly moving it around.
This aquarium had its origins in a single Pearl gourami that evacuated to my house during Hurricane Ida. I put her in a 20 gallon tank. Then a 40. Then this 100. Then got her some friends. And so it goes. :) I had to order the fish (no LFS in my area) and ended with a total of 2 males and 5 females. They all get along for the most part.

The photo is definitely a bit more pink than it looks in person. I tried to adjust the tint but couldn't really get it right. The Finnex was what I could afford when I set up the 20 and I just keep using them. I loathe the app/remote but the lights themselves work for me.

I almost don’t believe you about vacuuming the sand 😂😂😂 if that’s just corydoras running around I’m impressed!! I miss keeping them I may have to get a few

Ha! I get it. I have a betta tank and a shrimp/snail tank and they both need regular vacuuming. But the ones with cories? Not so much.

Love your tank! Especially fond of Pearl gouramis.

Since you are using RO, and keeping snails, what do you keep your kh and gh at? Wondering how you are keeping their shells strong.

Pearlies and Harleys, a person after my own heart 💯💯

and is that some gorgeous healthy Crinum calmistratum in the corner? My favorite plant 😎😎 don't see it that often!

Thanks and yes (!) on the Crinum. I’ve had it a couple of years and it has really done well.
